With all this new terrorist activity does anyone think it is possible to protect our trucks against and EMP attack? This way we have we all not only have the most reliable pickups on the market but after an EMP attack we will have the ONLY vehicles on the road!!

    Please elaborate!

lol....They're meteor proof but not EMP proof. Kind of scary to think of this happening, sure would be a good first strike weapon.

As true as this may be, NEVER under estimate the ingenuity and ambition of anyone fighting for religion, beliefs, and power. No matter how much more advanced we are than them, they will find ways to get done what they need to do to cause chaos.

If you can get cell phone calls in your car, then no (that's electro-magnetic energy entering your vehicle). You need to build a faraday cage around all your electronic components including the wires and your components have to be isolated from the cage.

The only thing to use is special shielding for any wires or electical componets, at least that's what is used on some military aircraft. Not sure the degree of efectivness. This could be the same differnece as the faraday cage mentioned above as well.

This truck seems to be primarily and electric vehicle. The whole thing uses toyota's drive by wire so I think we're all screwed. My question was more regarding the important areas to build a faraday cage around. I guess I could turn my garage into one.

You're not protected from EMP. Neither are all other non-military (and only a few of them) protected. Makes it an interesting dilemma for first responders. You don't even want to think about the cost in hardening your tacoma. I've seen a few hardened (and armored) BMW sedans for executive protection details overseas, and unless your name is Bill Gates, forget about it. I'd worry more about getting slammed with an RPG in New York than getting zapped by an EMP blast. Anyway, if a nuclear detonation is involved EMP will be the least of your concerns.

You'd only need to put a faraday cage around the computers (which may already be somewhat shielded due to the EM noise produced by the alternator and ingnition coils).

The rest can be hardened by replacing any digital signal wiring with fiber optic lines (which are immune to inductive interference), and the rest of the wiring should be replaced with coaxial cable (good luck finding 2ga coax for the battery leads). All this could likely end up costing more than the truck before you're done, so buyer beware (one of the smaller reasons military hardware costs so much these days...)

Also you should probably isolate the audio system and put a fuse in the line to the antenna since there's no good way to make a civilian radio receiver immune to EM interference.

You should also look into setting up your own fuel supply since all the gas pumps are electric and computerized anymore.

Probably wouldn't hurt to get on good terms with the local Toecutter and Lord Humungous as well just to be safe....

You'll need to go back to do something we used to do a loooooooong time ago called "walking":

    walk

/wɔk/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [wawk] –verb (used without object)
to advance or travel on foot at a moderate speed or pace; proceed by steps; move by advancing the feet alternately so that there is always one foot on the ground in bipedal locomotion and two or more feet on the ground in quadrupedal locomotion.

If you are close enuf for your truck to get EMP'd out....You got larger problems than driving amigo.

Not really a worth while pursuit either- Why add weight and extra points of failure for something that is so remote a possibility...Not worth the R&D either.
