Shit, I used to think that about the C5s doing touch-and-goes at Travis. It makes you think, that's not physics, that's fucking magic holding that thing up.

C5s are bigger than they look when they're flying. Those engines are 10' tall, yet look tiny on the wings. We had them all the time flying around us at Lackland (reserve squadron) plus depot birds. My brother was a flight engineer for 8 years on them.

What he thought was craziest was when insurgents would shoot RPGs and and short range rockets at them after take-off when they were already higher up than they looked. They look like they're right on top of you, but they can be at 5,000 feet!

...^^^... I used to sit or park on highway 41 at end of Dobbins Lockheed runway and watch C-5s land.

The C-5s would be 100' off the high point on the much higher road.

Runway was much lower than road. You felt like you could reach up and touch them.

The same with Air Force One. AF1 is no longer allowed to land there.

I was watching a C-5 do some touch and go's about 2 weeks ago in Bangor. It is a heck of a sight to see for sure.

Before flight ops moved from Ames to the desert, they used to fly a plane with experimental wings-the idea being a jet that flew low and slow-like the P3 Orion is capable of. Incredible amount of lift-that plane was making a tight turn and I swore with all my heart when I saw it the first time as it would climb up on one wing and turn with seeming zero speed. Ames Research Center had all the cool toys until it didn't. There's still a vertical motion simulator that is pretty damn cool.

Hey dudes I can try and give you a little insight from my experience...which is the Air Force side of the house. Like everyone else mentioned your major isn't usually the most important thing when looking to get a pilot slot. You will need to major in something though, and do well at whatever you choose, so choose something you think you'd enjoy. I did four years of AFROTC and graduated in International Studies....with no intention of ever using it because I, like you guys, want a career in aviation. It's a subject that interested me, and I'd be completey happy using it as a back-up if the pilot gig doesn't work out long term. The AF looks at you with the "whole person" concept in mind. Obviously grades, competitive physical fitness scores, etc...are crucial, but they also look at your commanders ranking, involvement in extra-curricular activities at school or in the community, and then they REALLY look at attitude, character, and work ethic through the recommendations of your leadership. Essentially they want to see that you are well rounded and involved.

Matt, the ANG is a sweet gig if you can find a good unit. I'm active duty right now but attached to a guard unit and it's kick a$$. Had I done my homework better, which it sounds like you are, I may have gone that route instead of active duty from the get go. You'll need to decide if you want to join on the enlisted side and work for a couple years and apply to get picked up for pilot training within your unit or get all the prereqs done on your own and interview for a slot "off the street." Lots of options out there!

Yeah, lots of options and lots of different paths to go to the same place. Just gotta figure out which path is right for me.

...^^^... My good buddy who worked for me in college was in AFROTC (his photo previously posted) and flew several planes ... IIRC, from 111's to F-16s. He had a very unusual and long USAF career (with some combat sorties) before retiring. AFROTC was an excellent way to work into a fixed wing pilot slot in the old days.

Most definitely, and it still is. AFROTC commissions more officers than the academy and ANG, and gets more people flying. It's a great way to go.

I don't get to this thread often enough. Awesome pictures of aviation hardware.
    Here's a Korean 747-8 in ATL.

Just catching up after my week fishing over on the Copper River. Great pictures!

AN-124 trivia ... That cargo outfit uses the "Volga-Dnepr" name because the factory that makes the aircraft is located at the confluence of the Volga and Dnepr rivers in Russia. I'll grab some pics @chris4x4 shared with us a while back.

There was a feature done on that a/c. They were worried over the engine cowling and rubber floor mat in the galley...idk if "first world problems" adequately describe those concerns. :crapstorm:

    Pretty nice plane otherwise.
