2nd gen double cab folding dog platform

Question: With this dog platform in place, is there enough room for 2 Rottweilers? Male is 85#, female is 70# (looking to buy a 2016 Tacoma). TIA

 

Just wanted to chime in and say thanks for the inspiration. I used you're measurements and made my own with a divide for the separate seat sections. Took about an hour longer than originally anticipated, but I think it turned out great.

Sheet of plywood, outdoor carpet, hinges. I don't know exactly. I did this a couple of years ago. But not much at all.

 

$50? Including buying a big staple gun. Not including the saw, measuring tape, and beer.

 

I went in a different direction. Got an idea from another member here.

Bought a horse stall mat, cut it to 60/40 to it fits on the seats when they are folded and took it to an upholstery shop. They added foam and made removable covers out of Sunbrella material. If I remember correctly the total ended up being around $120 for everything.

 

That looks nice, but there's a big problem with this setup: if you ever get rear-ended, your dog will get thrown back and impaled on the black, u-shaped pieces of metal that the seats snap into. The big advantage of having a solid back is preventing (or minimizing) that possibility. I'd suggest alos adding a frontal section to prevent the dog from becoming a projectile during hard/emergency stops.

 

True, but the only safe way of transporting a dog in a car is inside a crate, really. Most of the time I drive around only with the 60% side down and the 40% seat up. The dog spends most of the time riding shotgun or sitting in the 40% seat looking outside.

You got a valid concern though, perhaps I can make a cut in a racquetball ball and slip it over the U-brackets.

 

This is the 2nd version. First one, didn't have enough padding, was the wrong color for dirty dog paws, and was the wrong material for dirt lol. This one is perfect.

Does anyone have the dimensions for a 3rd generation tacoma? I have a double cab.

 

I just made the platform for my new truck (3rd gen). Time to take the pups out (two big black labs. 88 and 97 lbs)!. Included is a pic of the bigger one and one to confirm that both labs fit in the back! He's not quite comfortable yet, ha. I made one adjustment. I cut off 3 inches off the top of the back plate. The final measurements were 52" x 17.5" and 52" x 23". This left the back window fully visible.

 

I forgot if i asked this before, but why not a pet hammock? It goes over the seats, front bottom and back, and when its dirty, i take it out and shake it or hose it off. Also, keeps the dogs nose out of anything that might be behind the seats

 

I don't think the pet hammock would work with the seats folded down since you couldn't hang the back on the back headrests but I guess it would work if you didn't put the seats down.

 

That's what im saying, i use one with the seats in a normal position, dogs been wet, muddy, etc, and when its dirty i just take out the hammock and hose it off. I usually just keep it there unless i am driving with people in the back, and which case i just fold it up and stick it behind the seat or in the bed

 

First of all, thanks to this TacomaWorld community for sharing instructions and details that enable all of us to create stuff for our trucks.

Muchas gracias to the OP. I'll just add a few pics and lessons learned from my experience.

For the record, I have a 2014 DCSB Sport and a 10-yo yellow lab that sheds like crazy. I initially had one of those hammock covers, but it was such a pain to put in and take out for a trip to the vet that I was looking for a more convenient solution. Also, the dog has a more stable platform now with no gaps she can fall into like she would sometimes with the hammock cover.

1) The original dimensions given were great. I did upgrade from 1/2" to 3/4" plywood. Seemed sturdier for a 60+ pound dog.
2) For the carpet, I got this from HD for only $20 - I bought 6x8 feet, but they gave me about 6x12 feet for some reason.
3) Went with these hinges...note if you use 1/2" plywood, the screws may penetrate because they are at least 1/2" long
4) Already had a good staple gun and I used 1/2" staples - a buttload of them.
5) Could have done a 2" overlap but I did 3"
6) Cut a triangle measuring 3" on the equivocal sides off the top edges of the back for better fit. Also cut a chunk off the bottom part for no good reason.
7) Happened to have a pair of electric scissors that worked great for cutting the carpet - smooth and fast. The shears I had sucked.
8) Instead of using a Dremel to take out the latch holes, I used my jigsaw. I did it after it was already carpeted and I thought it might be a problem with the carpet snagging in the blade, but it cut through fine. I then stapled the carpet around the holes (not shown).
9) For the measurement of the latch holes see Pics 3 thru 6 below. I eyeballed them the first time, then adjusted. Using the measurements shown, you can avoid this. They are larger top to bottom than they need to be. The bottom is where I had to expand the hole.
10) To protect the seat cushion and the displaced headrests from dog hair, I added a 36" x 50" skirt to the bottom portion as seen in Pics 1, 2, 7 & 9 below. Then I pull the front seats forward, drape the skirt over the headrests and slide the front seats back in place.
11) To keep the back from falling, I secure it with an XL sized carabiner that you can get from HD or Lowes. See Pic 8 below. The normal sized carabiner will pull through the hole.
12) In hindsight, I might have used 3M spray adhesive to tack the carpet down before stapling it. I think that would have just tightened it all down a bit better.
