Well since my amp ohm rating did not match the new sub I purchased ohm ratings I went ahead and ordered a new amp for the sub. At this point I've come to terms with the fact that this 'simple' build has turned into the complete opposite so I wanted something cheap. Ended up ordering the Alpine MRV-M500 500w @ 2ohm monoblock Class D amp. Should have everything up and running by early next week.



On another note a man named Jeff called me from Supercrewsounds to talk about the box I purchased and the fitment issues. He was very nice and we walked through the photos I emailed him. He seemed to agree at least that the legs were definitely too short but stated the slight changes in Tacoma models year over year could be why the box doesn't fit exactly the way it does in the pictures. I was slightly miffed about losing my ability to use rear seat belts (for the box to even fit) when they have a video posted on their website saying the seat belts can still be used. I brought that up and he said that was a customer supplied video. He was going to elevate the issue to another Supercrewsounds person and get back to me.

 

You're going to love that amp. It is a little workhorse.

 

I can't wait to hear what you think of that amp. It's on my shortlist...if an offer to trade for some cherry old-school Alpine amps falls through.

 

I've got an old RF Punch 360.6 [6-channel] bbq grill laying around. gotta find the end caps.

 

The sub and amp are in possession! The ID sub, although the same model as my current sub, is much more beefy and well built looking. The surround is much bigger to allow for more extrusion and the terminals look of better quality. The amp feels very solid, has some good weight to it, and looks well built. Glad to hear other speak highly of it as I was on the fence about it. Packaging on both items were superb.







Can't wait to get it all installed.

 

Got everything buttoned up yesterday. The sub absolutely hits! I know it's a combination of the new amp/sub but wow, what a difference. I think its time to invest in some anti-rattle sound deadening material because there are now some rattles that weren't there before. The amp is awesome, its "birth sheet" was rated at 521w and its like half the size of my PG amp.

The difference between the subs (although the same model) was significant. The new ID IDQ was slightly larger diameter and the magnet was at least twice as tall as the old one, but slightly smaller in diameter. On that note, I need to retract my statement about Supercrewsounds not cutting the mounting hole correctly. The new ID fits in just fine, the old one had a smaller inside mounting diameter which is why I needed to build the spacer. BUT, with that said, the ID sub outside mounting diameter was TOO large for the box. I had to sand down three points, like shown:



This isn't my box, just a representation but the outside of the sub wouldn't fit on the three "legs" of the box so I had to notch them out. I'm only showing one of the three legs that needed sanding with the red box but all of them did.

 

I was thinking about that amp but went with a xdi 850 5-CH instead

 

I decided to go with a really similar sub amp - Alpine MRX M55 because it has a subsonic filter. Makes a few more worms too. Good to hear you like it. Can't wait to hear this one.

 

I've never purchased anything Alpine before. TBH I thought they were more hype than quality but I have to say so far i'm extremely impressed with this TINY amp. My bass is on fire now!

On another note, I had another phone conversation with Jeff from Supercrewsounds. I have to say, they get a 10/10 rating on customer service. They're going to make some design changes and send me a new box once finished. Couldn't be happier with the company.

 

That's so good to hear man!! It's nice to know there are still some good customer service out there.

Alpine has great products. My PDX 1.600 is amazing and I have had it for about 6 years. That little thing can just about push anything you throw at it and it is the same wattage at 2 or 4 ohms.

And Alpine has always been a good brand for the most part. They've made some solid head units & amps through the years although I haven't seen a recent head unit from them that did it for me. They have a solid track record. They make some interesting subs too. I'd like to try a Type R. Never been terribly impressed by their speakers, but always liked their amps.

 

What do you guys do with old subs? I feel like the magnet has to have some use right? Feel bad just throwing it out.

And I gotta concur on the Alpine sub amp. We have different models, but they're pretty similar. On this single SD3 10 it's nothing short of incredible. After an hour of fairly hard play, the amp was cool to the touch. It's really efficient too. I'm on the hunt for a PDX to replace my front stage Class A/B now.

 

You can recycle it at best buy.

 

I had a 10" Alpine Type R sub in my mustang... I miss it. Every day. Im trying to figure out how to get some boom boom back into my truck now. I had a 2016 Camry that had an upgraded sound system from the facotry that wasnt JBL and it was decent, and im glad i never upgraded it since it was totaled. But, the truck.... sounds like a damn tin can that left its balls at home with its girlfriend because it didn't have permission to wear them, anywhere, ever.

Now i need to figure out how to put a 10" in the DCSB and not loose the back seat. Not too concerned about loosing the storage, but it would be nice to retain some of it for my bug out bag.

This is true and if it were a legitimate bug out scenario i would. However, this isnt a true BOB if im being honest. Its an emergency bag. Back in 2014 i spent 3 days trapped in my car in Atlanta in a suit due to snowy weather and stupid people. I spent 3 days with no change of clothes, blanket, food, water etc. This has 4 days change of clothes, basic necessities, food, space blanket, medical kit, batteries, flash light, water, extra ammunition for my pistol, etc.. Things i dont want to just leave in the bed of the truck. My true bug out bag sits in the closet next to my rifle bag so both can be grabbed and thrown in the truck.

 

No way. In Atlanta? No friggin way!
