"Not likely. Most clutch discs can only be installed one way. One side of the clutch disc has the center hub protruding further than the other side , that side as a rule will face the pressure plate. If it is installed backwards the hub will be pinched against the fly wheel even while the clutch pedal is pushed in disengaging the clutch. In a nut shell if the clutch disc had been installed backwards the clutch would not have been able to disengage right from the get go and you would not have driven it even 1 block. Most likely a poor quality clutch disc or poor driving habits."

This is about the truest statement I have seen in this thread, I have not read the other one. I have installed many many clutches, or have been apart of installing well into the hundreds. That disc flat ass came apart. Its not from hydraulics (which there is no adjustment per-say). The clutch disc was near the end of its life, you can see where the rivits were making contact on the side with material left on it. The flywheel is not badly hotspotted either. I have seen them way way worse. I'd put my .02$ on it was a cheap clutch and fresh hydraulics sent it into failure quickly. I have seen this happen more than once in my 20 years of working in the automotive industry. Take it for what its worth, but I say cheap clutch.

Ya I could only get into 3rd gear after they installed the master and slave. And this just keeps getting weirder and weirder. I noticed today that my center console, what you have to use to replace a clutch, was never taken out. Like everything is how I left it when I brought it to the trans shop. When my clutch was replaced three years ago all of that was moved because he had to take out the center console to replace the clutch. Your thoughts?

Yeah right when they replaced the master and slave I noticed my shifting was all different. So I'm not believing this firestone at all when they say they have no role in why I had to allegedly get a new clutch. But and UPDATE I did go to the dealership and they said its impossible to drive out of any place with the flywheel in backwards. They suggested that the trans shop was just lying because they didn't want any involvement and its easier to blame a 3rd party that isn't present. Thoughts?

Maybe so then. I just know that the guy who replaced it last didn't do anything backwards. He spend his time on my truck and he even told me on the phone the other day when I called to ask him about my records there if it was possible for things to be backwards and he said what you guys said. And I've had my truck 8 years and never had issues like this and I follow all the toyota stardards in the manual when to shift so I don't think its me. My grandpa even said that I should never rest my foot on the clutch or my hand on the stick shift and I've followed that. I just have a feeling though I wouldn't win this case in court since its innocent before proven guilty. I just never had these issues where I was at in Canada and I guess I was used to that. But do you guys think I should get this checked to see if these trans dudes even did my clutch right? You think I should get it inspected by someone?

If you pay for repairs the removed parts are your property and you have a right to see them. If it's a warranty repair the removed parts belong to the shop.

Well that is a mistake on my part as I should have demanded to see that. I am young and I'm still learning but it is sad to me how many of these places are crooked. I think I'm gonna have to take this to someone else and pay more money to get the work inspected. At this point I don't even know if they put a new clutch in. They could have just given me one they had around. And theres so many aspects to this rabbit trail I'm even quuestioning if the plate or something wasn't just adjusted and they gave me the truck back or if they didn't do a full replacement of my clutch. So I'm lost right now on what to do. And I have a dash camera that was never even moved when I got my truck back and it set up at the center console so now I'm trying to think exactly what the trans shop even did.

We live and learn. I'd have called the police from the shop and filed a theft complaint if they pulled that on me. Assuming I hadn't eliminated that shop from reviews on the net and never gone there.

Be sure to leave an honest review of the shop to warn others.

Sorry I didn't see this until now. I was able to go into other gears but later that day, when it got hot, is when I could only get into third gear. It wasn't immediate. They adjusted something and then it would be good for a while but then it would go back to that. I've just never had that problem. Probably I should rewrite what all happened in another thread that way everything makes sense.

    FULL STORY
Ok so it all started when my truck started acting weird. My clutch pedal went to the floor and I had to use my foot to flip my clutch back up. I took a look at my trans fluid and it was out. So that day only firestone was open at this time to I took it to them. They saw it was low and put some fluid in it and told me to come back the next day for a fluid change and oil change. So the next day I did that. It cost me 50 bucks and they allegedly rotated my tires, did a full vehicle inspection, and topped off my fluids, but I noticed only the trans fluid was topped may I add. Anyway so they said it was good to go. It ran okay after that but that night I noticed it still felt like the pedal was sticking to the floor and sure enough the next day it was. So I took it back in and even though they told me the prior day there were no leaks now they said they found a leak. The mechanic showed me the leaking area and said I need a new slave but he also recommends putting in a new master. So I said ok do both. So he replaced both but one thing I did notice, which who knows if its important but I noticed it, was that the rubber piece that floats on the master was not floating at the top. I mentioned it to the mechanics and they said “Oh that’s interesting, but idk what youre talking about.” So I looked up to see if that part was essential and its not really. I guess its supposed to prevent air bubbles. But I still noticed it.

So when I got my truck back that day I noticed it was shifting differently but the mechanics at firestone advised me it would shift different after that replacement. So I just said ok and I still followed the Toyota standards for when to shift. So the next day I noticed I was having issues getting into gear so I took it back to them and told them “hey its not working as before.” So they adjusted something and test drove it a bit and that worked for the rest of the day but the next day rolled by and of course when the heat of the sun came my truck had issues going into gear. I was really having to force my hand to shift it. My truck would drive ok in the morning but when it got hot, the day that is, the truck would not go into gear easily.

So the next day the problem got worse and I had to force it to go into third gear. And when this happened I was around where firestone was and I could smell my clutch burning as I could only get into third gear. So I took it into them again but the mechanic was gone so I had to wait until the next day. The weird thing was though when I allowed it to idle for about ten minutes it was able to go into second and third gear so I drove it back to my place since it was only 10 minutes away and since I could at least get into second gear now I did that.

The next day comes and I bring it back to firestone and they say maybe the parts are defective so they are going to warranty them out and get new ones. So they said they were exactly the same parts but I noticed that this time when they replaced it the rubber piece was floating at the top of my master cylinder as it should have been the first time. But the first time that piece wasn’t even there so I wondered if they put in the wrong part. And I think I said in another post they were different manufactured parts but they were supposed to be the same parts but from two different places. Like one was from napa and the other autozone. So that was why they had different item numbers when I googled them. But anyway I found it weird the first time the rubber piece wasn’t there. And since Firestone test drove my truck they said across the interstate, which is 75 mph, there was still a chance they did burn the clutch in my opinion. They test drove my truck several time, firstone did, but they wouldn’t know if my clutch felt right because none of them owned Toyotas and they didn’t know much about Toyotas when I spoke with them. They didn’t even know about the rubber piece on the master cylinder.

After they installed this second time, I noticed the shifting now was the opposite. So I had to use more rpms to even back up. So now it was slipping. And it was about 2 days after that the clutch truly went out. So I was just driving up and when I shifted I noticed I wasn’t moving anymore. It wouldn’t go. I could rev it up but it still wouldn’t move. So I had it towed. I only had it towed to this certain transmission shop because firestone said if I took it there they would refund my money and pay for the tow and everything. So I even argued then that if they truly thought they were at fault why not pay all of it. So stupidly I took it to this transmission shop. Luckily instead of thinking they would pay for the tow I was smart and just used AAA since nothing was in writing and I knew later on firestone could lie about giving me a refund.

So when I took it to the transmission shop the first thing they said was that the clutch was out without even looking at my truck. They just knew by the symptoms that it was the case. And then they told me there is no conclusive way to prove who made the clutch go out. They said because clutches can go out in a matter of minutes if not driven correctly. They, the trans shop, even admitted they couldn’t prove or disprove who did it.

So the next day they called and told me it for sure needed a new clutch and I asked the what their warrantys were for their clutches. They said they used Luk and they had lifetime warrenties. I only stuck with them at this point because that sounded pretty good to me. He said if I drove it 3 years and it went out luk would replace it. So I said go ahead and replace the clutch. Do a full replacement. And they did and they called and said it went out because my flywheel was backwards. They wouldn’t show me that but they would show me the clutch which I guess doesn’t prove anything.

So when I went to pay they then notified me it was only a year warrenty and they don’t even warranty their labour. I asked again how it was possible for me to drive my clutch that long with a flywheel on backwards and they only could say that it is what happened, but I wasn’t convinced but at this point what was done was done.

So after this I call firestone and ask them what is going on with them and if they are going to use the refund they promised me to go towards this clutch. Of course he says at this point that he won’t issue one because he didn’t think they did anything. For me I’m willing to pay for the parts but they had to have another shop basically fully repair my truck which is why I took it to firestone to begin with. And since firestone couldn’t fix my truck it was at this transhop who did fix it. So to me I just know they have to have some involvement on this clutch. Then while I was talking to this guy at firestone he said the trans shop told him I went through 4 clutches in 6 months. I just said “Wow this is new news to me…I must have a lot of money and be a bad driver if I go through that many clutches in 6 months.” So he just said he was going with what the trans shop told him but obviously that wasn’t true. My truck is on the fourth clutch but only because the second clutch went out due to the originally owner not doing a full clutch replacement. In that case my clutch had gone out a year later so I took it to the dude of 3 years ago to do a full replacement. So right now it is on clutch four but this is all within a matter of about 15 years so four clutches in 15 years. The clutch that was installed 3 years ago was replaced at 162,000 miles and it allegedly went out now at 203,000.

So at this point, today I took it to the dealership and they said that it is impossible to make it out of the shop with a flywheel on backwards. So I’m really wondering what really happened.

    That’s the full story boys.

I have never seen a flywheel that could be put on backwards. I doubt they exist. If the flywheel were put on backwards there would be no place to put the driven plate and no holes to bolt the pressure plate to. Perhaps they meant the driven plate? I don't believe I've ever seen one of those that would work it put in backwards. The part of the hub that sticks out more goes towards the pressure plate.

I've just learned something, get them to write the warranty terms on the work order you must sign before work begins.

I'm convinced your clutch just gave up the ghost, just a cheap clutch that was installed a few years back. Nothing clutch related can be put in backwards and still have things bolt up in this case. It not working when hot is a sure sign of severe slippage. the way the material is blown off that disc also shows me that it was either faulty or severely over heated. Again, just my .02$. I can show you pictures that very closely resemble yours on a car with 53 miles on it. Brand new car. All caused by slippage/heat.

Yea I think clutch was shitty. All the hydraulic pressure in the world won't fix a shitty clutch. I think your barking up trees with no coons.

Just live and learn and buy a tool chest and learn to do your own work. You'll be a wiser man for it.

Op, don't take offense, I don't think either facility did you wrong. Possibly not the best, but I feel your lack of working knowledge leaves you to feel cheated. That's a terrible position. I think your looking for a reason or excuse that isn't there

IDK why it has Xs but Ill change it. Anyway I just didn't feel like updating. They ended up admitting fault. Same place did the same thing to other cars and sent them to the same transmission shop. They got a commission out of it. I ended up finding a good mechanic that was able to verify what they did and how they did things wrong. Lesson learned is never take things to places like firestone or jiffy. And overall I found an honest mechanic. I know how to fix some things but not all things. Previous clutch installed wasn't bad so I won't say he did bad work the previous guy. But I won't deal with places like that anymore. Thats the update. I'll update the thread post.

And if it makes you guys feel better I'm replacing my muffler by myself and possibly the shocks. I just have to see about a lift for that.
