Weird situation. Sending all the vibes to FL right now..

On another note, Tacoma related, anyone know a shop in the highlands/berkeley area that'll balance my 315/75/16s for a fair price? Should I just go to the Tire Store on Federal?

Yeah, it just looks like it was at the huge lake by the resort. No swimming signs but there should've been something about alligators with the high number of tourists aka clueless about what swims in the water. Theres no way they can keep alligators out, just have to catch them when they find them and relocate them somewhere else.

Any good info on dispersed camping sites near Steamboat with mountain biking in mind?

I know there is a biking event going on through Sunday, Planning for Sunday-Tuesday.

Emerald Mountain and the ski area stuff looks mostly open. I've found buffalo pass camping and some stuff up on rabbit ears.

    Clueless tourists will remain clueless.

Signs and alligator relocation won't make people any less stupid, or decrease the chance of someone getting eaten. People need to take responsibility for their own actions, or inaction.

Your problem is still snow and gated FS roads. Buff pass is probably open to the second gate, and there's a number of dispersed camp sites along the way, but they're probably all taken as that's the first place people go to camp close to town. There's a road the turns north off buff pass that isn't used heavily as it's a little rougher that doesn't get hit that might have a spot.

Right before the west summit of Rabbit Ears is a little FS road that doesn't have a gate that might have some good options, if you can get past the snow. Everything else I would recommend is gated, unless you want to get further away from town. Greenville Mine road might work, and is half hour or so away.

Hit me up if you want to explore or grab a beer or something. There's a road about 45min north of town I would like to check out. Will require lots of chainsaw use trail clearing and snow bashing and probably still won't make it to the top.

I was looking for a single din that had a flip out screen over the winter. I think there is 1 or 2 out there but the reviews weren't great so I decided to hold off.

I did just recently pick up a cheap tablet and installed it using gopro mounts.

It's not ideal but it'll work for now.

Oh I know... but I can at least see the "need" for signs warning people that alligators can and probably do live in the water. Nothing would've changed, and then I guess they would just say they didnt see the alligator signs. Just like the hundreds of sharks that are 50 feet from the beachgoers, alligators are usually a lot closer than you think. I used to waterski/wakeboard in the part of the river with alligators hanging out on the banks. Im still here. Although I was a bit worried one time when I was far behind the boat in a no wake zone on a tube and another boat pissed off a 12-15 foot gator and it jumped back in the water.

Gotcha. I'm hoping that arriving on Sunday afternoon/evening when everyone else should be going home will help us find a spot.

I'll hit you up if we have some down time or head into town other than riding during the day. I'd like to explore a little, but sure we'll be busy biking and having the bikes bouncing around might not be the best bet so I'll have to return for some trails.

Didn't a dude just recently get boiled in Yellowstone Park?
Happens more often than you know actually.
Grand Canyon has it's share of dead fucktards too.
A lot of resorts, tourist attractions, natural attractions, etc... don't have warning signs. And there is actually a reason for it. It detracts from the beauty of the visit, and screws up the photo ops. No shit, Yellowstone Park states just this reason. No fun to see a sign that says "Danger! chance of being boiled alive" Or "Danger, alligator infested waters, enjoy your Disney stay"
They have boardwalks and common sense says stay on the path...cause you know, boiling water and mud.
Florida has gators, stay out of the water.

It sucks for the kid, he didn't know better, that's what his dad was for and quite frankly he failed.

Yup and another tourist got fined $1k for collecting water when off the path... would've rather that he fell in also.

Unfortunately the population is dumbing down very quickly...

Did you call? I have my doubts the second gate will be open by then. Usually it's after July 4th.

First gate at Dry Lake campgroud should be open. Not sure on exactly mileage, but the second gate is probably about 5 miles up or so from Dry Lake. See FS 602a on your map? The 2nd gate is like a half mile up from there.

Gonna call shortly, was still trying to research a little. I hope there'll be something available along the way up to that second gate.

July 1st 2014 at the top of the pass:

The second gate was open, but closed the following weekend. A call into the FS reveled the lock was cut and it remained gated for another several weeks.

Turn down that road 602a. It's very easy to miss. There's a nice spot a quarter mile down on the left, and another a half mile down on the right. Don't go all the way to the creek, the road's grown in and you'll never turn around. Ask @TuckGraham :p

I just wonder what is going through people's heads... "FS gate is closed and locked as it always is, I should cut the lock and proceed!"

One would think that wildlife cams would be in place at these points. A hefty fine and seizing a vehicle goes a long way towards deterring stupid activity.
