Buy a Taco with a locker or with LSD???

I'm preparing to sell my Tundra & buy used a 4x4 Tacoma. I know both Locking & LSD rear differentials are available. Years ago I had a 76 Bronco with 4x4 & Limited slip. It did me VERY well on and off road. Now I see a lot of lockers being used. If you have used one or both maybe yoy can give me some direction. THANKS

 

I say locker. I love mine. It will do a lot better off road than the LSD. And I have never wished I had an LSD on road.

If you're gunna wheel, and it sounds like you are... a locker is invaluable on the trails. LSD can sorta help you out and you can trick it a bit using the brakes.... but it's not a locker. If you're gunna run a boosted street taco, LSD no question.

I have an '07 with a mechanical LSD. I like it. I don't do any serious off roading though. It works well enough for me in the snow, mud, and wet spots that I can typically still go in 2 HI where those with an open differential are having to use their 4x4.

That said, if I was going to do a lot of off-roading, I would rather have the locker.

Great feedback. I will be using it a lot on road but the whole idea is to go off road & on really nasty roads. Does the locker tend to cause you to slid out on dirt or mud roads?

 

You really only need to engauge the locker when needed. All other times you're running an open diff. 09+ has computer controlled braking/throttle management systems to have 'auto LSD, atrac' and such.. Personally I despise those systems though.

That said, I've ran my locker engauged (2wd prerunner) at about 70mph+ in sandy washes.... and you deff gotta be aware of the diff cause it can kick out... just need to drive appropriately and be aware on what's going on at all times. Never engauge it on pavement/non slip situations though, it'll put a lot of strain on the drivetrain. I do run it on full time when out in the desert tool'n around most of the time.

 

Good info. That is what I was hoping to hear. I've always told myself I NEEDED a locker. You guys proved it to me. If it is OK as i look for my new used toy I'll ask for more of your knowledge, like what to look for in terms of any options or addons, things to look out for. BTW. Love the pics of your trucks!

 

Awesome glad we could help... feel free to ask anything you need. However I think we already gave you your only choice lol. The TRD Off-Road is the only model (from the factory) to have the locker (electronically engaged below 2mph). Also, I'm sure your aware but keep in mind a PreRunner is 2wd, not 4x4. A lot of advertisers and people get PreRunner mixed up as an "awesome cool looking package" for a 4x4.
