New guy here. I've owned many Toyota trucks. I used to get a new one every other year. After taking jabs continuously at deer camp about driving vehicles other than 100% American made, I decided to try the 'built in USA' thing. I bought a brand new Ford F150. At 12K miles, the tranny let go. It was repaired under warranty, but still left a somewhat bad taste in my mouth. I put 40K on it, then traded it in for a new Explorer. What a miserable experience. It has made eleven trips to the dealer for repairs, including two recalls. This was before the odometer hit 23K. I also paid $1500 for an extra service plan. My calipers stuck at 18K miles, heating everything up so bad that everything turned red hot and warped. Ford wiggled their way out of that repair, and I was stuck with an $800, out of my pocket expense. Soon after that, my AC needed replaced. That was when I decided to call it quits with Ford.

Fast forward to a week ago. I purchased a lightly used 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport. I can't keep up quite yet with all the different models. This one has 40K miles on it, and came with the lifetime power train warranty. I've only put a few miles on it, but really like it. Currently shopping for a stereo that will make my Metallica and Motley Crue cds proud. The hard tonneau cover is going, as well. It will be changed with a cap.

That's a sweet looking truck there sir!

Sorry to hear about your experiences with Ford. I've gotten a few comments as well cause I've been driving Chevy sports cars all my life and now a non-american truck "isn't my style". But I love the truck and looking forward to having fun with it.

The thing is, Ford builds their trucks in Mexico. Tacoma is built in Texas (and some in Mexico too) Mine was built in California, says right on the vin. Welcome to TW.

    P.S. Metallica ~

Glad you made a wise decision by not going new on Tacoma 3rd gen, where your Ford experiences would continue.

Good choice on the 2012 2nd gen.

I hate red trucks, but not that red! Looks sweet. Rip your CDs onto a USB and get an apple CarPlay unit, you can put your whole cd collection on USB drive and never have to change a disc again; or worry about scratching or carrying them. I went with the Pioneer SPH DA 120 with auto EQ, amazing sound. Compatible with apple and android.

Says the guy who dosent own one and only frame of reference is here. There are plenty of happy 3rd gen owners that owned all gens.

Congrats OP, they are all great trucks.

Except for the auto trans, from what I hear anyway. I own several toys but wouldn't buy a 16 and never ever buy a first year vehicle, unless it's drivetrain etc was proven elsewhere, like another country or something.

So you own one? Cause I do and have had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen and my transmission does none of the things people have had issues on here, though some unfortunately have had some issues. It shifts the same as my 2nd did, my tranny fluid was full my driveline lubed and have yet to notice any issues reported here minus the hesitation when stepping on the gas compared to my 15. The few aren't the many bud. It's Toyota and the bones of the truck are from 2nd gen and the engine is a variation of a proven Lexus engine. That's like guys in 2004 saying don't buy a 2005 because it's new. Pretty sure your 13 is almost identical to that 2005 all new model and is proven. Toyota isn't gonna tank their Tacoma gem all of a sudden on a new model. Now I'm starting to see why the 3rd gen guys start getting upset when people who don't own one, haven't driven one run their mouths speculating from what has been said here.

Sorry, but posts such as the following do not give reassurances of the reliability of the 2016:

Seriously dude? I don't have the time but there are plenty of similar posts from new owners of 2nd gens over the last 10 years that had issues. If it's mass produced there will be likely at least some issues, if you study statistics and economics you know there is a level of accepted defect, etc in the equation I'm guessing Toyotas is quite low, but a few that came to a forum to get advice about their issues compared to the MANY with plenty of miles and no issues that aren't going to post about everything being okay is a terrible argument. You are speculating and you decided to use OPs thread to throw in your non related OPINION about a truck you don't have any first hand experience or knowledge besides TW.

Don't muck up someone's welcome thread with petty generation arguments, yeah? ;)

Sort of the same experience with my Grand Cherokee, wanted to by American, after numerous brake and drivetrain issues the 350 Hemi threw a rod! 9k for a rebuilt motor. After a bit of a search I found this 2009 last week, wish I would have gone Taco to begin with!

That picture was taken the day I got it, freshly detailed. After a week of Washington rain its not so shiny right now. My first black truck , guess I better get used to frequent car washes, oh well its good exercise?!?
