I did read it , I just read it again , doesn't say anywhere in there they were the lowest bidder unless I missed it twice

Sorry, it's covered in these two embedded links:

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/south-africa-alberta-firefighters-wages-1.3623422

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/rachel-notley-alberta-firefighter-south-africa-1.3625499

There is a lot going on with this and the public was not exactly told how this was going to work. From the initial media reports it sounded like these firefighters were volunteers receiving their pay from South Africa that had come here to help. Now it sounds more and more like they are simply the lowest bidders from some sort of international firefighter eBay who are now reneging on their deals because they want to make the same amount of money as local firefighters here do, which is literally a years worth of income for them in two weeks... it all smells bad.

They should get whatever minimum wage is just like temporary foreign workers

    Sure.

Except we were told originally that they were here under a transfer program. Basically a work away from home for experience deal.

If we were going to have to pay full wages plus their normal wages... then no offense but I would prefer Americans here who wouldn't quit working on the fire to get what they want. Notley already has our credit card maxed out.

What do you mean full wages plus their normal wages

South Africa is still going to pay them their home wages, which is separate from their compensation for working here on their two week "volunteer" rotation. Basically they get whatever they make at home plus whatever we pay them which Notley says should be roughly $14/hour. Plus their living expenses.

These guys normally make a few hundred bucks a month according to the article. Figure out what two weeks of 12 hours days, with overtime, will pay at $14/hour. They are going to make a years wages on one rotation...

It stinks. Especially since we turned away so many other countries help that wouldn't of lead to anything like this.

Basically, to me, it sounds like we turned away other countries help to save a few dollars and then we got screwed by some clever workers who understood the rules better than their employers.

South Africa pays their home wages so you wouldn't pay both and US firefighters wouldn't be working here for $11 / hour

They will likely alter the guidelines so that bids need to have the workers working in BC or Alberta paid at least minimum wage for the time they work here , not sure how that doesn't break the foreign worker program guidelines if they don't

    Piss on it.

I am making light of the wage situation and definitely not of the losses.

    I would hope so.

I guess most of my issues are from the other help we turned away. I'm guessing an American, or other developed nation firefighter with a similar earning potential at home, firefighter would of been paid his at home wages by his home country and accepted any stipend as a bonus without complaint. The issue with the South African firefighters is that they are paid so low at home that they are not being compensated, in total to pocket, in any way close to the same amount of money as the Canadians they are working with. That leaves them with the ability, and moral right, to strike for wages similar to the people they are working with...

It's just a sad deal all around. Again I firmly believe our government turned away other offers of help to save a buck, come on they probably knew what they were paying didn't add up to minimum wage here before this happened, and now we are simply seeing the sad result of trying to lie about why a certain set of people are here working instead of another set.

Anyone have any pointers on rock chips through 3m paint film? I have one right on the hood and I am afraid it might lead to premature rust. Is that something toyota/3m covers?

3M is not liable for sure:

http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/961187O/scotchgard-pro-series-warranty-card.pdf?fn=SG PPF Pro Series Warranty Card

And I would suspect that Toyota will claim that the damage is a road hazard and thus not a part of their warranty program.

My advice would be to peal off the clear bra and have the chip sealed by one of those micropaint places. It should be cheap and they usually carry 3M film for you to redo it yourself. This is all assuming that your rock chip actually made it through the paint. That's a hell of a rock to puncture through the clear bra and the paint without doing more damage, like a dent.
