OpenVPN server + client. I am a big Red Hat inspired type, CentOS all the time. Have good time with Kali, Solus, Fedora, Oracle, SteamOS, BlackArch, I'm getting into Turnkey VM's now which used a spin on Debian Jessie that I've never really gotten into.

Thanks! Gonna climb Half Dome :benchpress:

Kinda wish I could do it in my truck instead though...

You should definitely go up sometime to see the scenery, there's really nothing quite like it

The descrption of the climb where we had to buy passes said that since the early 20th century, "only a few careless and irresponsible climbers have fallen to their deaths". Somewhat reassuring I guess lol

Pretty comprehensive haha. Was messing around with CentOS until RHEL6 became free, but I'm a newb so for daily driving I keep going back to Ubuntu Gnome 14.04LTS. Work has been dipping into RHEL kickstarts- would behoove me to work on RHEL. With CentOS and RHEL being related, have you found some things not working on one that works on the other?

That sucks... someone use air tools on it over-torquing it?

Nah. CentOS is literally the same team as Red Hat. CentOS builds of matching numbers to the corresponding RHEL should always work fine.

I have worked at a few companies that use RHEL and Oracle most prefer RHEL just because you can get support for it, go figure. At least the Red Hat team is doing what Microsoft should have: pay us and we actually can help you with people who know what's going on. The problem with the VAR/MSP market is they all want to sell you Windows systems not install quality Linux equipment that can do the same thing at a lower price.

Ubuntu is great for exposing people and getting folks into it: all my latest Windows buddies are starting there or Linux Mint. I use Fedora on my laptop, CentOS on my server farm, and Windows 10 on my desktop (gaems ). What kind of work are you in?

IA. Our RHEL SME has run into issues where certain software programs (maybe scripts as well) vetted in the dev environment on CentOS hasn't worked on RHEL, but maybe he went across a version number as well.

The only CentOS I have at home is Rockstor. FreeNAS has a slick UI and I was on the ZFS bandwagon but I just couldn't get it to work as well as I liked, so tried out Rockstor and haven't looked back (plus I have a thing for underdogs and BTRFS seems like the underdog right now). Rockstor has some nice Rockon (docker) documentation for OpenVPN as well. My Asus router (yes, I'm not that big of a home labber to have better networking gear) has OpenVPN support baked in, but the processor and RAM would be a choke point, so nice to know I options.

Here is to hoping Vulkan will bring the need for Windows down a notch or two ;). At the very least, after watching some unRAID vids, I got the motivation to physicalize a Win10 VM w/ an AMD GPU in passthrough. Had to use AMD as Nividia won't let ESXi use it in passthrough (Good ole' linux will though).

Man, wish I could make next week's meet but I don't think I'll have the new CV axles installed by then.

That's the big thing with RHEL vs CentOS a CentOS version corresponds directly with a RHEL release. Any change in numbers could be an issue. I've also found a lot of dev environments are not duplicates of the actual production environment, dependencies are hard! Go figure :D. I just had to start adapting a custom MOTD script I have on a file share which was built purely for a CentOS environment and I tried putting it on a Debian based server... WHY THEY GOTTA DO SHIT WEIRD, MAN. Luckily I quite enjoy working my hands into some Bash scripting.

Interesting choice: I've heard FreeNAS a lot but not Rockstor, I'm averted to the whole "a free NAS thing, kinda like all the other ones!" OS's 'cause I'd prefer an actual server. I use Samba shares to get things down to my other machines and Subsonic 6.0 streams my music library for me. KVM hosts my virtual machines (mobo NIC didn't support ESXi) and I'm using a Cisco managed 8p switch so I can get 802.3ad for my server. VMs range from web servers, SQL servers, OS workstations, appliances, etc. It's my fun little toy y'know?

Check out Rockstore, the Linux new kid on the block, the david of Linux NAS vs. the Goliath (freeBSD FreeNAS). I am curious about KVM, even played with Proxmox a little, but a coworker gave some solid advance that with my goals on the home setup/lab, to use enterprise solutions wherever possible for resume development, so ESX for now (and maybe -dry heave- HyperV), and looking at Cisco ASAs on ebay vs. doing a PFsense build.

IMO a lot of Linux guys are like that, they enjoy the challenge and adventure. I'm pretty impatient and start bashing my head. Its fun sometimes, and sometimes I wonder what career I got myself into... its overwhelming... but at the same time I can't really imagine doing anything else.

What kind of work are you in?
