I noticed I had alot of play in the brake pedal yesterday. Today I took it to the Toyota dealership (they had a good deal going on). And I was told that I had about 20% on my drum brakes and that they were way out of their adjustment and I was using purely my front brakes to stop.. Thank goodness I was starting to downshift during that time.

I just had my brakes done at 76,xxx miles and currently I'm at 84,xxx.

I have hit my ABS a few times.. when I went mudding (06BLUEDBLSPORT remembers ;)) and the guy at Toyota said that could be a sign of why my brakes were out of whack. This was all done for free by the dealership... To good to be true. Well it was true! :)

But Just a reminder, ALWAYS keep an eye out for your drum brakes. As they do wear more quickly than the front.

The pads are alot softer and are smaller than the fronts.. The fronts will go for about 100,000 miles.

They do most of the ABS system. thats what made mine wear down so fast.. the adjusters were skewed.

I only use 1 set of rear shoes per 2 sets of front pads. Been like this on all my vehicles.

    No....fronts before rears.

If the drums are wearing out faster, then there's something else wrong.

After you went mudding, did you bother to take the drums off and clean in there?

Mud is BAD on drum brakes and can get in there and prevent things from working properly, including the adjusters.

Also, check your ebrake cable system. If you use the ebrake and the cable gets hungup (on mud?) and can't spring back - the shoes could possibly be dragging.

not sure if its still true, but you readjust the rears by backing up. When u apply the brakes it will adjust the rear.
Weight shifts to the front , thats where the stop power is on any vehic or bike, which is why they can do drums in the rear if the disc power isnt needed(normally)

Dealers....well they may tell u anything that guides you to work($$ ) for them

2 sets of fronts to 1 set of rears is pretty normal. You definately have something else going wrong there.

I just had my Tacoma's state inspection renewed last week. They check the brakes as part of the inspection. My guy told me I had probably over 75% left on the front brakes and over 85% left on the rear. And I'm at 43K miles.

For those folks that want to check their own, make sure there is over 5mm of friction material left on the shoes.

My shop checked my brakes when he did my winter rim swap & said the rears looked brand new (40k), but my fronts needed to get done in the Spring.
He said the winter/salt plays havoc with the front discs setups. Is this true? whats true?
