Awesome pics and looks like you guys had fun!

I spent the day picking up this guy or i would have joined ya :)

Other than the drive train its pretty much all original minus a couple add ons here and there. Only 40k miles on the odormeter too! The original owner swapped in a 350 SBC then the second owner took the 350 and dropped a Chevy 283 in it (with a TH350 and stock transfer case). Other than 1 tear the original leather is in amazing shape too. I guess the second owner tried to do a "resto" of sorts like 20 years ago and the guys son (who i bought it from) basically they did a shit job....which is true. Most of the bubbling seen in the pictures isnt rust but is bondo on flex points or just poorly done areas. The FJ has sat for more of its life than its been driven from what i was told. Second owner bought it, used it a bit, stole the engine and it sat for ~15 years. They did the "resto" then drove it for a few more years. It sat then the guy i bought it from drove it for a bit then its sat for the last four years. Luckily the Chevy 283 doesnt appear to be seized (turn the crank last night) and all fluids i checked quickly were full and didnt look terrible.

Now to just finish up the couple other projects I have so I can start the tear down and rebuild!

Maybe see about replacing the 283 with the 4 liter from 2nd gen taco to take it back to Toyota parts, assuming you have money to blow. Nice find on that old beast

Brian did a fantastic job leading. The last trail made the run more technical than some expected but it was a great way to put the trucks to work.

My recollection is that Land Cruisers had a version of a chevy inline 6 engine originally. Toyota bought the tooling and license from chevy. Is this correct? That's why it's easy to swap in different chevy engines?

For the price I got it from I might go back to Toyota parts. I could tell the guy didnt really want to see it and he knew he was selling it for way less than he could have gotten it for. I tried one lower offer and could just tell there would be no negotiation (even though he had OBO lol). But even his asking price I jumped all over. Or I might not. If this drive train actually runs and works I might just keep it. Im thinking I want to keep it simple which really rules out newer motors. Nice not having a computer on it. But overall I havent decided on what ill do drive train wise. I like the more horsepower of the 283 though. But a 3 speed tranny might suck. But all that can be determined later, lots of work before I get to really drive it.....especially since the brakes dont work lol.

Landcruisers came with the Toyota F engine originally. Which is an Inline 6 but was made by Toyota. It was like 1975ish when the 2F engine came out if i remember right. THey are rock solid engines just a bit underpowered by todays standards for a heavy vehicle. The 2F is like 135HP (around that at least) for a 4k pound truck!

Chevy engines arent just drop ins. A lot of guys swap in Chevy 350's though. There is just a lot of room in the engine bay and trans tunnel to really fit a ton of options. 350's are just cheap, reliable, and easy so you see them quite a bit since rebuilding a F or 2F motor is often more than just getting a good used 350. Theres been some pretty cool engines put in these like the 2UZ-FE (first gen tundra motors) and some Cummins Diesel motors

Whether Chevy helped develop the "F" engines I have no idea. I just know they are Toyota motors and dont mate directly to Chevy stuff.

If you have the funding, maybe see about the 3.0 diesel that dodge has in some of their vehicles for a drop in engine. It could be tricky, but also replacing the head with carbeurated could be an option on it as well. Otherwise an older diesel that is already carbed might work nicely to provide ample torque for you.

I understand driving underpowered. I have the 2.7 in my truck, and strapped a trailer on, then loaded up 2 tons of hay

I dont know everything Ive just been researching and looking for a FJ40 for ~2 years now so i know the basics. Its crazy how some guys could look at the one i bought and pick apart everything that was truly stock, what was added after buying, and what is totally aftermarket.

Note i didnt say Chevy didnt help develop the F motor though. I honestly have no clue if it was solely done by Toyota or if Chevy did have a hand in it. Especially looking at pictures of both they are similar.

I though of diesel but I honestly dont know anything about them to be honest with myself. Funds wise who knows how much Ill toss into this. I pretty decided that for the most part only my overtime money will go towards this. Since my overtime money funds the tacoma, guns, tools, and other projects im not sure how much will go towards the FJ. First thing is first though....gotta take it all apart!

And gotta see if itll start before that lol. Id love if it would start, just need a battery to see.

Joe uses a set of 8 (4 on each side) Smitty Bilt defender mounts. They work pretty damn well for how cheap they are. I used to run them too.

I have mine mounted on a platform rack that I had built.

    Here's mine....

    Awesome rack

With the defender mounts, are you mainly using them as a seat or do you actually use the rails on the bottom of the RTT

The rails on the bottom of the tent attatch to the defender mounts, which attach to the factory rails of the 4Runner.
