That's a good lookin rig! I'll be on the lookout. Progress always seems to happen faster when you look back on it, my truck was totally stock a year ago and I've done so much to it already, and I'm gearing up to redo the suspension soon too.

I'm so pissed off right now. One of the bolt holes on my motorcycle gas tank is completely fucked up, even though I take my time with every bolt I ever tighten to make sure I don't mess things up
Can any of you recommend a damn good tap and die set? I'm currently thinking about going with a set from MAC tools because I'm so angry and pissed at this BS.

 

Irwin makes the sets used by Snapon/Mac/Ect. So compare prices before you buy the "track brand" vs the regular name. For taps and dies call a local machine shop and see what brand they use and recommend. Most wont mind sharing the info. Automotive brands seem to be more expensive than machine shop brands even though they are the same quality. Im kind of cheap though as I have a Tekton metric and SAE tap and die set. Then for the sizes I actually use and need quality i just buy individual ones.

But if your hole is just "messed up" thread wise. Consider a thread restorer like the the Crasftmen set. Which is the same as the Snap-on set.

The thread restorer will "reform" the threads and work out any binds without cutting new material. A tap will obviously cut new material. Obviously if the hole is completely F'd up just retap it but if its just got a lot of resistance and dings in the threads the thread restorer is a better option IMO.

 

Both holes let you go about 3-4 threads or something before stopping, so that thread restorer sounds like a good idea.

For starters, the different types
Old Craftsmans were high-speed steel (HSS), which were fantastic, but have since gone down in quality... probably carbon fiber now... probably still reasonable for me, though.
You are correct on Irwin - "all truck based companies are rebrands of irwin/hanson" was one quote. This is probably the set I'd look at . Still carbon and not HSS, but supposed to be really good for home user.
Norseman, Morse, and Greenfield are supposed to be the step above, and Emuge is even better. Going overseas, German-made Ruko are supposed to be great
Getting an old set of Blue Point are also very good (they were their own entity until they became part of Snap-On), if you can find a geezer who is willing to sell

It seems the general consensus is to buy them individually, as the kits have a lot of unused sizes.

I have a greenfield set at work that are flawless. One specific size has been ran down at least 14 billion bunged up holes and still cuts well. There are many sizes in the full set that have never been used once though...

 

Yeah the kits contain a lot of sizes you don't need. Kinda why I picked up two cheaper sets to have those odd sizes and then pick up better individual ones that I actually use and need.

That craftsmen thread restorer set goes on sale for 50 bucks every so often if you can wait.

 

My MIL got me the craftsman restorer set a while back and ive used it a numbet of times for work and peraonal use and its been great. Worth the 50.00 she spent for sure

 

Anyone in the Portland area have a good recommendation for a mechanic, 1st gen with 130k and I am having an issue that is stumping me. Could be driveline, tranny, rear diff or U-joints etc. Feels like it is slipping or resistance on acceleration from stop and an occasional load bang on hard accel passing someone. I'm stumped and I don't feel like replacing everything piece by piece to find the issue.

 

anyone have 4 rims I can get cheap? 16 must. stock preferred

 

I've got some DC-1s in 16s. Even still have tires on em lol. If you drive down to my shit hole, 125 takes all 4

 

I have a set with tires too that have only a couple k on em sitting in my garage too. I'm in bend. They are 16's and came off a 15.

 

I just placed an order for a Lang 972 thread restorer kit. It's the same company as Kastar, which is the same as Craftsman, Snap-On, MAC, ....
Ended up paying a little extra to get it sent Prime by tomorrow since I'm hoping to attend a motorcycle clinic on Wednesday.

Mike, a little late now, but for basic sizes, electrical supply places like Platt and Northcoast Electric usually stock drill/taps up to 3/8-16 made by Greenlee. They could probably order in 1/2" for you as well. Put 1 bit in a drill and go. No need to switch bits. I am going to assume that you will be smart enough to pull your gas tank off and shake out any metal shavings as well.

 

Someone in the pnw needs to step it up and starting fabbing some armor...
