Thanks, but wasn't looking for your sympathy, or anyone's for that matter. It is what it is. I was just venting.

Update....it turns out that Enterprise and other rental car companies no longer allow towing in their fleets. So I'm up the creek. My fault for listening to the guy I was dealing with at the dealership for tell me..."it's not that bad." Hopefully it won't be too much longer for my frame. Going on 4months now. Live and learn.

    ****Not looking for sympathy.

Well, better just hope you don't get a ticket until then! If you do, at least it's not points on your record or anything, just some money.

When I went to pick up my truck, one of the mechanics showed me the rust...he said he probably would have passed me, seeing as how I'm getting a new frame and all...the other mechanic he said was a stickler...just my luck. I'm going to another place to get another inspection done...they were recommended.

One question and two points. What happens if it isn't reinspected in 15 days? Seems a bit ridiculous if they say it permanently fails if that requirement isn't met.

Point one is that it sucks having mechanics check to see if your vehicle "needs" mechanical work. That is like asking an insurance salesman if you have enough insurance.

Second point is that vehicle inspections seem goofy to me period. Sure I understand the intent, but in practice it seems like another tax. I live in a state with no vehicle inspections and have never once heard of an accident caused by some kind of mechanical failure on a vehicle here. Not saying it doesn't happen but it must be pretty rare.

Back in 2008 Toyota was doing the buy backs on the bad frames. I had a 1998 Trd Tacoma and the frame had about the size of a half dollar. My truck had 173000 never any motor work and did not burn any oil. I would change the oil every 5000 miles and still would be on the full. But they gave most people such a good deal to buy a new truck. It seems like their making out better buy just replacing the frames.

Apparently, there is a huge underground market for inspection stickers. Million dollar industry from what I read.

I used to work security in VA checking IDs for cars entering the military base, so I saw quite a few cars over the course of a year. I could spot a fake inspection sticker a mile away. They were so obvious it was sad! They look like they're just printed out of an office printer. At least those were the bad ones. For all I know there are "good" ones that flew under my radar and I had no idea.

The location they do the majority of the inspection on is near the catalytic converters. They use an air scaler to check for perforation. Not sticking up for the dealership but perhaps they saw the holes up front and didn't bother looking in the rear?

Either way it sucks for you. I was given a Corolla, have them a little grief but I had my truck back in 2 days.

When I picked up my new Tacoma, the finance guy wanted me to sign A waiver that I will never sue the dealership or Toyota for any reason. I told him to keep the truck and give back my deposit. He said "never mind".:annoyed:

If you have the rust..you really should get it checked. It's a brand new frame.

The buy back program was only for early model Tacomas up till 2000 or 2001, the 2001(?) to 2004 Tacomas were part of the frame replacement program.

I'm kind of torn on which I'd prefer if I was in those shoes, I love my truck and if they could replace the frame to keep it going another several years I'd probably prefer that route. But for the buy back program, I read they were offering more than KBB value which would also be hard to turn down. Guess it would depend on how much was invested into the truck.
