Good places to get safety inspection?

Mine is coming up for renewal, and I already passed Recon last month.

Should be able to go anywhere as long as your recon is current.

Thanks for the quick reply, Kevin.

That's what I thought, but I've also heard and read that some safety inspection stations give you a difficult time even with a valid Recon sticker.

Just trying to go with the path of least resistance. I remember someone saying they go to a place in Kanehoe, but was wondering if there was a closer option. I live in town.

if your recon is current, I don't think you'll have any problems.

    Yikes RECON sounds like A$$.

I am shipping my truck to Oahu in few months and need some help.

I have bfd FN 18x9 with toyo open country 275/65/18, they stick out alittle, I do have factory mud flaps but i trimmed them shorter right above the 4x4 letter. Also toytech 3in bilstein lift all around, and black headlight housing, also the headlight reflector was painted black I might of messed up there.

What is the process of getting the RECON sticker? DO you think with my minor mods ill be ok?

    thanks in advance

can I just put reflect tape on the head light where the reflector is at? Ill probably just open the headlight and try to paint thinner the paint off the reflector before shipping to the island.

I dont quite understand the RECON situation. the point of get the RECON is because the car is modified thats why we pay the extra $money right? whey are they so picky

Recon is a safety check for modified vehicles. The inspection is to make sure that your truck complies with the reconstruction rules. As long as your truck complies with recon and the normal safety check rules, you'll have no problem. You will need to bring a printout of your alignment sheet that shows everything within specs.

There's a common saying here..."it's the cost to live in paradise". And like anywhere, there are up's and down's. I find more up's!

Anyway, like Dana said above, any reconstruction to a vehicle (specifically suspension changes) need to be inspected by the Recon Office located at 1112 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816.

Just go here for the latest information:
    http://www.honolulu.gov/cms-csd-men...s-about-reconstructed-vehicle-inspection.html

The line isn't that bad in the mornings, and I was told to avoid end of the month because taxi's have to get some sort of inspection at the same office/location during that period.

Reconstruction permit, is what it is. Just think of it along the lines of a building permit to put an extension on your house. They just want to make sure everything is done properly and charge you a little money.

Your setup sounds like quite a few trucks here already. Should be good to go. Make sure your tint isn't darker than 35% on the front 2 windows. No "bluish" type headlight bulbs or HID's (visible ballast). Good luck

for the tint, the experience I've had is that the tint itself should be 35%, but your tint reading can be down to 29% due to the "tint" already present on the factory window (even though it looks clear). I forget which one of you guys does tinting... @jimbo808? maybe he can clarify, but that's what I've been told at inspection stations.

@John taco - sounds like you're gonna need to do something about your reflector. I'm pretty sure they'll fail you for that. to be honest, I don't even know if reflector tape will work either. I think the recon guys can get pretty picky if a couple things stick out on your truck, since you're giving them a reason to scrutinize. just my $.02 :D

yup 29% is the lowest you can have on the 2 fronts. The tint itself should be 40% or lighter to pass because the factory dyed glass is usually around 70%.

Great, so my front two windows are currently 20% tint (matching the rears), I will probably leave it like that until I get to the island. Also I have the tint strip on the top front of my windshield, much lower then the 4in mark.

I can peel the tint off myself, anyone know a reputable tint shop on Oahu and price for the two front windows?

    thanks
