Can't answer for the one posted from Amazon, but the one I got from Baofengtech.com (no affiliation, etc) works fine - just have to make sure it clicks into place when I install it so it doesn't jiggle loose.

Works great. And that is one of the few mic /speakers that works.. I've been told that the other ones suck.

What happened to our local Chirp Frequency spreadsheet? Or maybe I am just blind now but didn't see it in OP.

You're blind now :D So I made it big and red for you in the above quote (In fairness, OP did kinda bury it)

So who's the next cool kid to get their license?
I know @NYCO and @lotsoftoys got a good, practical demonstration of how good HAM can be on the trails at Moab.
I never ran a trail with the Canadians this year but I could hear and talk to them every day as they ran other trails and the audio quality was more like a cell phone than a CB radio and this was all simplex (direct, no repeater).

In the spirit started by @Lars and continued by @chenbro, I have a baofeng HT for the next one to step up.

And so begins the next few weeks of bathroom break "HAM test prep". Looks like there's a test conveniently located on 8/11 which gives me plenty of time to study. I've got a Baofeng BF-F8HP on order since I want to play with it and learn how to program it before I pass the test. My dad was an electronics technician so I've got a leg up on some of the equations, and all of the schematics I've seen so far. There's a test this week 7/14 at the same location, I just don't know if I'll be ready by then.

If you're decent at memorizing and test taking, two or three days of practice tests should be enough. You probably wont learn anything, but it'll get you through the test.

I am still trying to look for some off-road based information/writeup online to explain how a lot of it actually works with how we will use the radio. I DGAF how to bounce off a repeater and talk to the space shuttle between solar eclipses, and therefore, most of the study guide info went in one ear and out the other. I was out of town for the last good class that had info but when it pops up again, I'll keep everyone informed.

54.69% of questions mastered. Maybe I'll make it for the test this Thursday.

Woohoo 31/35 on the official technician test. Now we wait for the call sign posting.

Also guessed my way to 16/35 on the general so that might not be so bad to take next month.

I've switched over to a Baofeng UV-82HP from the BF-F8HP. 1W less (1/4/7 instead of 1/5/8), but a louder speaker, easier to hold (larger footprint in the hand), ability to PTT on both channels (2 PTT buttons one for A one for B), and a more conventional phone layout for the number pad (0 at the bottom instead of right side).

So I now also have a BF-F8HP for giveaway to add to the one @teamhypoxia has. Pre-programmed with the TW channel layout, plus I added the 7 weather channels on CH61-67.
