...^^^... When my transmission out @ 500 miles on a new 2007 Tundra ... Toyota gave me a new transmission, nice rental, worked on it over the weekend and gave me a 100K, 7 year platinum warranty.

The Tundra was brand new (1st full size) then and Toyota probably wanted NO bad PR too.

However, Mr. Smitty99 is probably correct ... you will get a rebuilt transmission.

    op,

sorry to hear about the issues.

others, i don't think theres more problems with toyota quality today, than in previous years - there's just more ways to announce the issues at full volume. there's certainly frustrations but toyota offers a warranty because they know they can't be 100pct certain of no issues. thats the point of a warranty on anything; 'we believe it could break on you, but we'll fix it when it does'..

I have a 2009 4cyl with 5 speed. When I'm moving it shifts fine if I put the clutch 1/2 to 3/4 of the way to the floor. Shouldn't have to push the clutch all the way to the floor while you're moving.

I used to shift my '78 2wd without the clutch while moving, I could downshift from 2nd to 1st without the clutch. The 2009's transmission doesn't like shifting without the clutch, I haven''t tried it much. The '78 had car running gear, engine, transmission, and rear axle were the same as the Celica.

This was about the only helpful post in this thread. The only thing I'd add is that when they do the repairs, see about them giving you an extended warranty.

    Talk about troll bait.

For the record I've also taken a brand new car on a trip only to have it break down on the way. Result was the SUV was towed to the dealership, we were given a free loaner while repairs were made and we picked the SUV up on the return trip home.

Can't imagine the OP getting anything g much different. It sucks but it happens. Kept that SUV for 6 years, no other problems and got rid of it when the wife wanted something else.

    Quick update.

I took it to the dealer in Myrtle Beach. They drove it for 50 miles then gave me the 'couldn't duplicate issue' crap. I'm not really surprised. It took hours for it to heat up to the point where it started sticking.

Today we made the 500 mile trip from Myrtle Beach to Orlando and it didn't stick this time.

I'm not at all convinced that it was an isolated incident, but I'm happy that we're able to continue the trip so far. I have an appointment set with my local dealer when I get home.

When I called Toyota Corporate to document the issue they seemed very willing to work with me on making it right. They were willing to foot the bill for a large rental to continue the trip. They also mentioned the possibility of buying it back or extending the warranty. It all depends on a dealer being able to duplicate the issue which could take some time.

In the meantime I'm having the wife whip out the phone and take video any time I've been in gear for a long time and then downshift.

We managed to get all the way home tonight. I have an appointment with my local dealer for Tuesday morning and that's a good thing. The transmission stuck in gear pretty bad on the last two legs of our trip. I can now agree with the person that posted about it being more of a safety issue than anything else. We had a 50 miles stretch of curvey 2-lane roads full of steep inclines and declines and the transmission waited until that stretch to act up. I had to shift continuously between 6th, 5the, and even 4th a few times and I never knew whether it would be a hard shift or a normal one. It really sucked.

For those that haven't experienced it yet, it feels like you're trying to pull the transmission out of gear without using the clutch while there is a load on the transmission, but even harder. It's hard to explain until it happens to you and it's really surprising when it happens.

On a less severe note, the differential continues to get louder. Not a safety issue, but not something that a person should have to deal with on a new truck.

No. Video wouldn't do it justice so I didn't bother to wake up the sleeping wife when it started.

I had issues this weekend when I went to Panama Beach from Nashville. Had no issue going down with sticking in gear but when coming back I had noticed when going to shift on highway, it way like trying to take out of gear without pushing clutch. Trip one way was about 500 miles. I noticed it about halfway back to Nashville today

Sorry to hear that. Mine is at the local dealer today. They couldn't duplicate the transmission problem which isn't really a surprise since it takes such a long drive to pop it's head.

They also couldn't duplicate the differential noise or brake vibration which makes me think they weren't trying. I told them to have a tech ready for a ride along when I pick it up because I can make it happen on command.
