Changed the oil, but friend got oil on belt.

Ok well I was changing the oil and a friend was helping. Unfortunately, before I could tell him that there is a tube to drain the exes oil from the filter he unscrewed it, spilling oil all over the belt. Now my Tacoma squeals like crazy. We did the soap trick and it only last for a hour or so. Also got some belt dressing and it didnt do a thing.


So I guess what I have to do now is change the belt and clean the pulleys really good and that should stop the squeals right? Is there a better rout to go cause I really dont want to have to replace a belt that only has like 3k miles on it.

Normally I wouldn't recommend putting any 'dressings or cleaners' on the belts.... but...

Did you try any brakleen? (or similar)

You gotta clean the belt off and clean ALL PULLEYS. It might squeel for a bit....just give it some time after you clean everything. The belt has to reseat itself (for lack of a better term) and perhaps letting it run can burn off the remaining residue.

So are you saying, take it off clean everything then put it back on?


And brakleen as in brake cleaner right?

 

I'm not sure if brake clean is OK with rubber or plastic. Read the ingredients...some nasty stuff. What about Dawn dish soap or a waterless hand cleaner like Goop?

 

Before starting the engine spray everything down with brake cleaner. Let it sit for about 30 secs or so before starting engine. Start the engine and spray some more brake cleaner on the belt/pulleys as they rotate but exercise common sense. Watch your fingers and wear safety glasses to prevent fling from getting in your eyes. Grab the garden hose and spray everything down with the engine still running. Do this when the engine is cold to avoid all that water getting on your hot engine. Be sure to get the cleaner and water spray on the inside running portion of the belt as this is where the majority of oil will collect and cause you grief.

I know brake cleaners and rubber don't mix, but it shouldn't be there long enough to cause any damage. If you are anal about it though, get some Castrol Superclean or similar engine degreaser instead.

This may or may not work but worth a try if you don't want to remove your belt. Finish up with a little belt dressing and you should be good to go.

Yeah, I took it to the car wash and sprayed some of there 'engine cleaner' on it and that didnt do much at all.

So I will try, what about normal DAWN dish soap? Thats supposed to clean oil off right? I figure I will try it then was it off good then try the brake cleaner.


Does any one have a good guide to removing the belt?

 

use electrical contact cleaner & compressed air
or Isopropyl alcohol

I have tried putting dish soap and turning the truck on then spraying it out with a hose, that gave about 30 secs of peace and quiet... then the squeal was back.

Then I tried contact cleaner and it didn't do any thing. I am all out of ideas.

 

Engine degreaser. It is a foam that sticks to the engine then you just rinse it off. Give that a try.

 

Engine degreaser, dawn dish soap, carwash and a lot of elbow grease... you are going to need to get a rough bristled brush and scrub the crap out of every part you can reach. it is going to take a few trips before you get every thing but i would steer clear of brake cleaner.

 

i would take the belt off,find your friend and whip him with it.

Umm..if its cheap enough, just replace the belt? Shouldnt be more then $20 or so, and keep your OEM one as a spare..By the time you should "need" it, the oil should be gone.

 

Uh, IPA would dry the belt out :/ Pretty sure electronics cleaner would too....

If dawn doesn't work... I'd probably just replace it or live with it :/

 

Something's wrong. I spill oil on my accessory belt every time. Hate that oil filter on top.

Anyway, I just wipe what I can and never hear ANY squealing.

 

You know there's an attachment line for any left over oil to go into the catch, down the tube to where you direct it (aka, oil pan). Also, I always pull the filter off last so any oil not trapped in the filter drains out from below, works like a charm for me every time. (v6)

 

Did you clean off ALL the pulleys?

Grease on the belt will get onto ALL the pulleys it drives. Then, it'll transfer back onto the belt if you don't clean off all the pulleys.

 

Underneath the filter, there's a rubber thing sticking downward. You gotta pull off that rubber piece (I had to use pliers). Go to any hardware store and buy yourself a 20" long piece of rubber tube that'll fit onto this fitting. Snake the tube down to your oil pan. Easy and clean.

When you're done - take the tube off and put the rubber plug back on.

Save the hose for next time.

I use an empty powerade bottle, but once a friend was helping me with my recycling, saw the bottle in the garage and dumped it all over my lawn thinking it was old leftover grape powerade

Well today I am going to take the belt off and clean the pulleys. We will see how that goes.
