Mannual Tranny Fluid Q's

A couple Q's on the Manual Trans:

What is the stock oil/fluid?

How much fluid does the trans take?

If one were to drain the trans, would putting just a LITTLE less or a LITTLE more fluid do any major damadge?

Anyone use RedLine MT90? Any major difference?
I have not noticed any major difference, actually it seems like the red line mt90 is "thinner" and not as smooth...

 

Read your owners manual. Type of oil & the amount you need should be in there.
Or perhaps search the forum or search google.

Always use the FILL PLUG when putting oil in your manual transmission (or transfer case, or differentials).

The FILL PLUG - the hole itself is specifically located where it is so you can't overfill the transmission. Fill the transmission until the oil starts to come out. I wouldn't recommend 'under-filling' it.

Overfilling can be just as bad to your transmission as underfilling.

 

I believe the MT is a little over 3qts. but check the manual, I don't remember.
I know changing all the fluids in my MT 4x4 was just under 8qts. front, rear, trans case and MT case.

 

As Janster said fill it until it comes out the fill hole, also be sure to do it with the truck sitting level. I think some people have reported better shifting on the 5spd with Redline MT-90, can't say from personal experience though.

 

Okay you're scaring me! my 6spd trans only took about 2 qrts? Chris 4x4 you around here?

 

does it take a while for the "new" oil to break in and be smooth? it doesn't seem as nice as the stock oil....is that because it's new? any one else using MT90?

API GL-4 or GL-5

It doesn't break-in.
Typically, synthetics aren't susceptible to the cold - but sometimes if the transmission is cold, it won't shift as smoothly. It shouldn't take long to warm up and shift smoothly.

If you're not happy with the way it shifts even after it warms up, then change it to something else. No biggie...

Redline MT90 is good transmission oil, and a lot people use since it is ONLY GL-4. I ran it in my Elise and EVO RS. I used it for just under 40k miles on my EVO and it was smooth shifting across the board. I was looking and our transmission requirement is GL-4 or GL-5. If you do get 75-90 GL-5 make sure you get the 75-90 NS GL-5 it's the one for transmissions.
