BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 - Wasting my Money?

I have a 2011 TRD Sport and need new tires. I'm at 51K with the stock tires - yup, I don't drive much.

I love the look of the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2. I'm in SoCal and Discount Tires quoted me $1120.00 OTD. That's a lot of cash. I rarely, if ever, go off the asphalt.

Am I wasting my money when taking into consideration what these tires are designed for and my driving habits?

If you are not in a rush you might want to look at ebay, Discount tire direct has a sale from time to time, $100 off of $400 or more, something like that. I bought 2 sets of 2 tires, got them for a total of $830 for 4 tires, shipping and tax included.

2 tires were $514 - $100 promo = $414 x 2 = $828

Tires were 285/70/17

 

If you love the look then no, you aren't wasting your money.

Especially since you had 51k on stock, those Goodrich all terrains will probably suit you well.

 

You might want to look at something in a P-rated tire that has more of an aggressive look (does that exist?) if you're not going offroad ever. Even the C-load K02 are fairly heavy. I had E-load K02 and my ride was awful, and fuel mileage suffered considerably.

 

I've heard good things about the laufenn x fit at tires from Discount Tires. The 265/75r16s weigh less than 40 lbs a piece and are P rated (4-ply) tires which will help with ride quality and mpg over load C/D/E. It's what I'm planning on running soon.

Interesting. These are E1 too so your mileage and ride degraded significantly then?

 

$1130 seems like a lot compared to what others seem to be paying. That's more like Canadian pricing.

 

Yes. It does seem to be quite high. Not sure why that is.

 

You'll find a better deal if you shop around, that's pretty steep. As others have said, a P-rated tire would be great for you too. The Hankook AT tires (ATM RF10?) have a good aggressive look, and come in at a great price as an alternative. They seem to get good reviews.

I used to sell those at pep boys. A solid set of the ran 600-700 (aligned, tax and road hazard). They often have rebates for $50-70 back through hankook too.

 

Too high, should be able to get them otd for under a grand anywhere in 265 70 17 in "c" load. Of course other people have done better above.

 

FWIW, I bought some BFG ko2s from discount tire a couple months ago. 285/75 r16 Very happy with them. I got them to wave the tpms fee and price match an online price I found. Saved me around 150.

 

I highly recommend Cooper AT3's, especially given your situation. I have the P-rated version. Awesome tires, have that "off road " look but are silent for highway driving. Cost a fraction of the BFG's (paid $420 including installation/balancing). Finally, far lighter so MPG won't take as big of a hit. I went a size up from stock, 265/75/16 and couldn't be happier

 

Yes, they are very stiff and heavy. My truck would clatter and bang and vibrate over road imperfections. And mileage suffered. And braking suffered. I went from the rugged fails to ko2, then sold them, and bought c load duratracs. The duratracs are one size bigger and yet they ride much smoother.

 

Ditto on that I had the same experience with the BFG's on my truck. If I wasn't fond of driving in the desert I would have gotten rid of them long ago.

 

I won't put anything else on my Tacoma's other than BF Goodrich All Terrains. I love them.
Tacoma's are meant for manly tires that make them look tough. If you want smooth
operating tires drive a car with sissy tires.

 

I had General Grabber AT2's for years and loved them. They are cheaper than the BFG's and look somewhat similar. That being said, I caught a sale on eBay and got 4 BFG's for 720 to the door. They look so good, but I don't think the performance is much different between the two.

 

Hankook dynapro Are the best value for the money. Aggressive tread, grip the road, quiet, and inexpensive compared to other brands.

 

How do you like the ride? Are you experiencing any issues such as excessive road noise, reduced gas mileage or issues with braking?

 

Cooper AT3s FTW. Under $800 out the door at discount tire for LT275/70-17 with full road hazard warranty. I'm on my second set. Unless I just get bored or something better comes along, I'll run these for a long time. They're best tires I've run and I've run them all....BFG, Scorpions, Nittos, Procomp and half a dozen others....this is first tire that I've bought again. They will go everywhere I need them to go and I've run the backcountry from Montana to New Mexico and everywhere in between without a hiccup.
