Extended warranty worth it?

Dealer offered me the toyotacare extended warranty for 6 years/100,000 miles for $960, I initially declined but offer is still good till end of the month. I was wondering if you guys think its worth it or anyone getting a better price? Thanks!

 

I got mine (10yr/100k) for free but if that wasn't the case I doubt I'd spend the money on it unless it was maybe <$500.

 

I've had good luck with my 1st and 2nd gen and maintenance/working on them myself has been relatively easy. Just with the new gen was curious if it wouldn't hurt. But I tend to not hold onto trucks very long either.

 

I would almost always say no it isn't worth it. On a 16 though, the peace of mind might be.

 

If I read TW before purchasing my Tacoma I would probably get it.
When I bought my 4Runner in 2010 I didn't worry about extended warranty, even though it was a "new" 4Runner... it was made in Japan!

 

Right. My 16 has been flawless, no vibes, fluid was full (I watched them do the procedure), no weird shifting, everything was greased and torqued, only issue is its sluggish laying into the pedal, but that's a characteristic of the powertrain. Feel bad for the guys who are dealing with all the little things. I love my TURD gen.

 

For me the 7year 100k mile upgrade was 2300 bucks but if I don't use it's refunded

 

Interesting, didn't think that was the case as you see used ones all the time with the warranty still in tow.

 

I might call stealer tomorrow to see if I'm still eligible for extended warranty.

 

Mine gave me 30 days to come back and buy. I know there's a guy on here that sells them cheap, you can buy one the whole time you are in the 3 year 36k mile warranty.

My dad did it with his 2004 tundra dcrb, it's bumper to bumper and covers everything besides normal maintenance like timing. It's a hassle to get the money back since it's not the dealership, but with all the tech and new engine and trans.... Thought it'd be worth the extra$$

 

True, but a lot of times when you buy a used one the previous owner's platinum extended plan transfers.

 

Bummer, I'm over 30 days already. I'll check with a guy here I guess.

 

Isnt the Toyota Platinum through Toyota, I would assume there's no reimbursement needed as its through Toyota.

i took a quick look at it and i believe it only tops up the basic factory ncw (new car warr). that said, its not really a 'deal'. you're only adding 25k to the already well portioned 60k mile base. that said, you do get a few oil changes but you have to follow a mile + time service schedule. if you only follow time, and do your own light stuff, you lose a portion of the toyotacare benefits (i believe, but someone from a dealer may know better). i would take the $600 "value" of whats being offered and just bank the cash. if something goes wrong, it'll happen much sooner and covered by the factory ncw anyway. nothing is free and toyota beancounters know the odds of using this warranty are low. all oem ncw's are engineered to be less of a burden to the oem under the first 100k miles as most components are designed to last that long without major flaws (drivetrain, engines, catastrophic tranny failures). that's essentially why most certified series or optimum oem used car programs are only valid up to 100k mile units. anything over 100k miles is a roll of the dice and toyotacare only covers up 25k above the base 60k mile ncw.

take the $900 as a credit for service or accessories instead - better yet, knock it off the already negotiated lowest price... when the dealer says no way, you'll see the real value of it because it only costs the dealer a few hundred to buy into the contract.

however, if it were high end euro model or commercial service vehicle, then i might see the value. as it is however, i'd take the cash and get a roadside service through a credit card or 3rd party.

yes but its corp. not the dealership the Toyota care is nation wide. I paid 2300.00 and in 7years or 100k if I don't use I get the 2300.00 back since I didn't use. Toyota hopes you use it for something small so they keep the 2300 but its a way to ease the new car owner to buy the extra

 

I was referring to another post where they implied that the repair cost/service was reimbursed and a pain to get paid. Maybe I read that wrong, either way, I have a hard enough time considering it at $900 let alone $2300, I think it'll just go to my savings if ever needed.

 

this is the standard care it starts day one of ownership. not the 7/100k
