Quick question...when cold my truck is really slow to shift from reverse to drive. Maybe 1-3 seconds. The RPM drops at first but then you get a second slight this as it engages Drive. It only does it when cold (like after sitting 2-3 hours). No other trans issues and dealership and my own personal testing shows the trans as full.

So, my question is...is this Normal or do I need to keep bugging my dealer about this?

I'm just going with its normal. Mine does the same thing and they checked the fluid and it was a half quart low. Not much really and it's no different now. At one point I recorded it at a full three seconds till the truck started moving under its own power from park to going into drive.

That being said. Even if it is "normal" it's something that shouldn't be Happening and a slight safety issue. Could easily cause a fender bender when it engages if someone had hit the pedal wondering why it wasn't moving as intended.

I've also noticed when shifting going down the road for example from 3rd to 4th it'll feel kind of like it slips or something. The rpm will shoot up around 500 more than where it was when it goes to shift then clunk a bit into the next gear and lower back down. Anyone else have that? It's not always 100% reproducible though so the dealer wouldn't do a thing I'm sure. I've gotten that runaround on a few other issues I have. Like my seat rocking back and forth under acceleration and breaking.

This may be normal right now but hopefully once there is a transmission logic update that this behavior will be resolved.

Ive had one similar experience but the other way, mashed the gas to pass some yahoo, it downshifted, jumped up to like 5,500 rpm and then slowed back down to like 5,200...like it was slipping and then engaged. Only happened once and is not reproducible.

I am also going with that it might be normal. Mine does it from P to D every time I leave in the morning and leaving work.

when you start it in the AM put it in neutral and let it run for 30 seconds then proceed. if it does not do as described then you know the fluid has drained down into the tranny pan. note the fluid does not circulate in park so that's why neutral. if this is the case then you will at least know why.....

It is more of an annoyance but if you needed to switch between reverse and drive in a hurry it is annoying. There is supposed to be an update coming soon with a TSB so hopefully that will just be a part of the Toyota care service

In the TIS manual, there is a max allowable time for the r-n and n-d shift; 1.5 and 1.2 seconds respectively.

Exactly my experience. Still have the delay after topping off 3/4 q. Not related to fluid level. I hope this is not "normal".

Did you have the "learning" reset after the fluid top off? Just a thought.

The information you guys are looking for is in the first post of the low fluid thread .

STILL HAVING DELAYS AFTER PROPER FLUID TOP OFF ( 5/4/2016 )
Some members are taking their trucks to the dealership to have the fluid level topped off properly and are still experiencing a delay from reverse to drive . Toyota uses " SQUAWK " control to prevent that initial lurching feeling when the transmission shifts into forward .
Squawk control selects 2nd gear rather than first gear to remove that lurching feeling . Squawk control is computer controlled and the logic can easily be re-written to improve this. Expect six months for a fix

These two sound totally plausible. My truck does roll forward when the delay is happening and the thud could be the downshift from 2nd to 1st...my only question then is...Why only when cold??

Let's hope this is the case. I would love if there is a fix for this annoying habit this truck's transmission has. Where did you hear there is a TSB coming soon to fix this??

Just for a heads up ,fluid does circulate in Park in the AISN-SEIKI AC60F / AC60E . Perhaps you are thinking Chrysler with their 1960,s technology ?
Park is used to check the fluid level in the check fluid level process , therefore the fluid has to circulate .

It has been mentioned many times by Toyota dealerships that a software update will be released to fix up the delay , but no official word from Toyota yet

Here's my .02 in dealing with said issue.
When I back out of my garage, if I do a slow roll and change gears, I get a moderate delay.
If I slow my roll to a stop and give the brake pedal full force, I seem to have mo delay.
rolling stop, delay. Full stop no delay.
