I found a few internships that I applied too, and I hit up my professors for reference letters, I have NO experience in any kind of IT job.

My IST professor said she would, here is her response:

"Of course! Send me a bio of yourself highlighting your strengths. I really can only comment on the great work you've done in my class, so the bio will help with the letter of rec."

So, would the seasoned IT people on TW recommend reading the internship description and using the desired skills in the description as a base of what I should highlight in the recommendation letter?

    Thank you!
    B

Just make sure your resume does not mention your username anywhere. Lol

Literally. Make SURE your email address is some play on your.name@somethingnotaol.com

Highlight "soft" skills you have towards the needs of the internship. An intern is usually expected to not be a wild cunt and to be inexperienced. If you come across excited about the project, to learn, quick to take on new skills/strengths, a team player, etc. you'll GREATLY help your chance to get in. A LOT of companies would pick someone slightly less qualified who is far more enjoyable a person over someone who is very qualified but a rude/undesirable personality.

Talk about any projects you've taken on that show a desire to learn and grow in the field, etc.

Be prepared to not get it. Learning to rebound today will help you a LOT tomorrow.

    Good luck!

Thanks Digital! I included writing samples from school, my final project, and a few letters from teachers. Now. I'm just crossing my fingers...:)

^^ THIS. Ask your professor to highlight the softskills as mentioned. That should help get you to at least a phone call or in person interview.

Once you get to actually speak with someone, make sure you talk through your thought process and let your personality shine through. When I'm interviewing someone for a peer team or to join my team, I care more about how they got to their answer and why they thought to do it that way more than the actual answer itself (assuming they're in the general area). Additionally, I'm looking for how I think the candidate's personality and work style would mesh with the other people already on the team. From the hiring perspective, its easier to train someone on the hard skills but fits in great with the team than trying to get the team to work closely with someone who has minimal soft skills but very technical.

yeah if you get an internship

do not I repeat do NOT touch, fondle, drool over, or otherwise distract yourself
with a smartphone, facebook, doodling...etc. it's a job. a fake one, but a job. do internships like a man and they can
turn into big paying jobs if done right, and in the right environment.

spend one second slacking, doodling or 'not feeling it' and ....they won't 'feel it' either

so...'IT' was mentioned. that can mean 1000 different things. specifically what in IT would you think you want to focus on ?

Best advice right there, along with 127.0.0.1's advice. If you find you can't fake it, you'll know soon enough that IT isn't your thing.

Thank you! I had my organizational behavior professor write me a LOR along with my IST teacher. There was a lot of mention about team work, interpersonal skills, etc. So I wanted to include a letter from my OB professor, mainly due to my lack of experience.

Thanks for your reply, greatly appreciated!

Yup. The ONLY website I dick around on during the day is TW, and there's way too much of it for comfort. I'm the lead guy here, started with the fledgling company 15 years ago, but you will always have to be very mindful of slacking... anybody can and will be replaced if they're a big enough tool.

I used to be in mortgage sales, so I am a great bullshitter . I read a plaque back in elementary school "If you can impress them with knowledge, dazzle them with bullshit..."

It's not so much being able to BS as it is being able to figure stuff out on the fly. You'll know soon enough if you have that aptitude, once the pressure is on and it's do or die.

Same here. When i started with my current company, I busted my ass and made sure I learned anything and everything the first few years. Once I established a reputation for being one of the go to guys and always being able to resolve issues quickly, it was only then I started to slack off a bit more and surf around TW.
