Have you tried J & M Fastners in Concord. Over by the Coscto? I used to go to Emigh Hardware all the time when I live in Sac. Browns Hardware was awesome, until they closed down. Sad day when that happened. That place was iconic.

Never get to Concord, unless zipping through to somewhere else, but thanks for the tip.

    Never knew about Brown's.

When I first came up here to college, THE hardware store was on 17th and J. Newbert or Newberg Hardware, I can hardly remember. Then Home Depot came along, and Teh Great Box Store Darkness descended. It went out of business. Then The Beat, the awesomest used record store ever in the universe (OK, maybe second to Rasputin's) moved in and doubled in size. So awesome.
Then The Great InterWebz and Ipod Darkness happened...

Now it is a fucking Bevmo.

Is that a Hobie Super Surfer? I had one just like that when I was a kid, took a big spill in the Berkeley Hills and hamburgered my face pretty bad; not sure I ever got back on. Oh, that was in 1965 or '66. Thanks for the memories.

the Hobie boards I remember from the 60s were tiny compared with modern boards, like 20 or 22" long. the clay wheels and funky trucks were right off early-1960s vintage roller skates.

The clay wheels and die-cast trucks with flex WERE modern compared to the steel roller skate wheels and trucks nailed to a 2x4 we had before!

true dat. as kids in hilly SF in the early 60s, my parents gave us these red plywood skateboards with said metal wheels. total suicide machines on the steep hills of the northern part of SF where we lived. I don't remember the brand, but it was stenciled on them in white paint on the red board. round nose, square cut tail, quite small. "Roller Derby" ? I dunno.

Indys weren't that great until they redesigned them around 1988. The design hasn't changed much since then. Back in the day, Thunder, Venture, and Trackers were all over Thrasher mag, but me and the other kids all rode Indys. The axle would break loose on the other trucks, but it wasn't bad with Indys. Throw on some NMB's (or Swiss if you were fancy), some Crossbone or Slimeball 92A 59's and you were set. Dogtown Eric Dressen was my favorite board of all time, followed by my Lance Mountain. I had big feet.

Lance Mountain, Indy 159's (maybe 156's), and Powell freestyle wheels.
Yes, those were Converse cons- accentuated by my pegged pants. Our parents were tired of replacing Vans every 3 months. By then they were completely patched with shoe goo. Mid & low top B-ball shoes back then looked exactly like DVS or DC's of the late 90's. They lasted twice as long too.
