Temp Gauge/Compass Question

Is it possible to purchase and install the overhead Compass/Temp Gauge in a non TRD 2010 Tacoma?

 

Yes it can be done. However it requires some modification of the existing overhead console.

I went to Toyota and purchased the meter assy only. It is part number 83290-04011. I think it was $125. I then removed the overhead console and took off the door for the garage door placement. I took a dremel tool and put a notch on the front half and another on the rear half. The cable is already there to accomodate the module. You do not have to buy the temperature probe that fits in front of the radiator as it is already there. It is just a matter of fitting the meter assy in the hole left by removing the garage opener door.

The new compass/temp indicator has improved the the wattage of the 510 resistors that plagued the 2005-2008 tacoma owners. The meter assembly comes with the plastic cover over the display and it looks quite nice once installed. Works good too. i think on some the wiring is their but the temp sensor is sadly left out. I was going to do the same mod but dont have a sensor in mine and cant find anyone that is willing to sell me there's when they sell the overhead display..

 

If you have a 2009-2010 Tacoma the temperature sensor is there directly in front of the radiator. The temperature sensor on the newer Tacomas are part of the Air Conditioning and Heating Control. The module I spoke of will work with the newer Tacomas not the 2005-2008 models.

I just recently added the temp / compass module to my 09. I got a hold of an '06 console. My interior is tan and since 05-08 only offer the overhead console with the t/c module in grey. So I then found out from the dealership that they had a guy that could dye it to match my interior. I got hold of him and for $85.00 he dyed it to match. Then I bought the '09 version of the temp compass module and replaced it and then installed. Looks factory to me. I still have to get the button on the new module dyed but it looks good even with it grey.

My '09 module cost around $300 and the dye job $85 and the overhead console $40. Still beat the Toyota price of about $1000.

Just want to make sure I am thinking about this correctly. The overhead console (06) fits your 09 and you just put the 09 display in the 06 console. Where did you get the console and do you think the $125 display referenced by the OP would work? Thanks, Jesse

 

I've read in older posts that scangaugeII can not read outside ambient temperature. Now seeing in 2009 and 2010's the temperature sensors are installed regardless of whether there is the overhead console, does anyone know if a code is available now to read the temp. Thanks

Yup.. The overhead consoles with the temp/compass show up from time to time in the BST section. You likely have the wiring harness and temp sensor in place already. If you pull down your console, there'll be a connector stuck on top of the garage door opener compartment. Just look for the later (2009+) style. While the console and gauge bezel are the same, the meter itself is different, so the earlier ones won't work with your harness.

BTW... I have a new style meter for sale in BST. No console though.

Does any one know if a Toyota Tacoma, with a V6 towing package can pull a 5th. wheel travel traler ok. Alonza69

bought mine from another member, BUT the compass is stuck in NE, anyone know how to fix this?

 

I purchase temp/compass gauge 8329004011 for my 2009 tacoma base extended cab and pluged into the connector and it doesn't work. I get dashes and N and nothing else. any suggustions please.
