It's very hard to describe, but just curious if anyone else is experiencing the same thing that can enlighten me. I am not sure if it's somehow a backfire?? or the starter doing funny things.

Once in a while when starting I will hear a loud metal clank or maybe a cough of some kind then it starts, it happens so unbelievably fast and only happens once in a while.

Very hard to hear or describe, sorry for the lack info but has anyone had this issue?

Yes. I have this. It almost sounds like the starter motor stays engaged for a little bit long. I notice it mostly when the truck is warm and I am running several quick errands and i am starting the motor numerous times in a short timeframe.

Yeah that's the exact time it happens for me, between the manual transmission problems and this sure hope that's all, lol....

I guess nothing to worry about though.

Not sure if it is something that will cause problems down the road or not. It is so sporadic regarding when it happens that I will not take it to the dealer because I'll get the old "could not duplicate" line. I am curios if more are experiencing this?

By the description my first thought would be the starter is sticking or engaging too long. Do you have a push button or regular key?

In defense of dealers. It's hard to fix a problem or figure out what exactly is going on based upon a not always accurate description of the issue by a customer.

i am going to mention it to get it noted when they finally replace my transmission, just incase the flywheel shreads to pieces 5 minutes after warranty or something crazy just in case.

it doesn't have that spinning up sound, or the grinding of gears sound, it's more of a hitting a hammer on table, a maybe 1-2 piston missifre, extemely hard to describe. Nothing like trying to start the truck again while it's running sound lol.... (not done it on this truck so don't jump to conclusions please).

My dealer just blames every problem I bring to them on my tires. Some how my tires cause differentials to wine at a specific speed (which other dealers are fixing with new diffs), exhaust resonance at a specific rpms, drive line vibrations while slowing down. They tell me it's the tires and then in the same breath tell me they can't replicate the problem. Im sure the stater is related to tires also. My dealer blows ass. /end rant.

Doing it when hot? Or cold? You shouldn't hear a misfire, if it's a piston you have bigger problems

Only when truck is hot and I run into a store for a quick second, or like nevadabugle said starting it often in a say running down the street to get lunch. I might be imagining the missfire but I'm sure it coughs for a few cycles, it happens really really fast.

It's really loud too, kind of startles you.

I can see how they might think it's a tire noise, especially if your running different tires that are more agressive. However if your unsatisfied with their diagnosis then simply try another dealer. Or if you have a go pro or something stick it under the truck and try to get a recording. I understand first hand how people have bad experiences at dealers and don't like them, however there are good dealers out there. Also if you ever get a survey in your email, mail, or a call make sure you take the time to do it and rate them fairly. If your unhappy and give a bad survey odds are they will bend over backwards for you to try and correct your issues. Or atleast take the time to look at them better

Could be exhaust related, and I remember an old thread where one user had a lose exhaust hanger bracket and it was making noise
