Wow, that's super generous of you. You're offering to be his mom's personal chauffeur? The generosity around this place never ceases to amaze me!

five 3rd gen owners i know in person and in real life love their trucks one being my father. the only problem i have read about here that has applied to any of them was the mis-aligned bed issue, and was fixed by the dealer. two of the five are previous taco owners one is a previous frontier owner and another a ram 1500 owner.
mine came into the dealer on friday while i was on vacation and i get to pick her up tomorrow. ive already requested specifically everything be checked ive read about here... fingers X'd

Yeah man I also have all those symptoms on my brand new 2016 trd off-road with manual transmission. I've never owned a Toyota before, and I've been told growing up that they're over priced pieces of plastic. But I got one because stupid Chevy cancelled all their manual drive options for their v6 4x4s. I thought all these weird little quarks it had were normal. I've read that the howling noise of the diff. is also present on the 2nd generation. So I just assumed all these other issues I've felt were just normal. But you're telling me I can take it to the dealer and have them smooth all that out? I did noticed the grinding of the brakes when you're about to come to a complete stop around the first 3,000 miles or more. But I'm at 5,000 miles now and that doesn't happen anymore. The grinding is gone. Probably just have to let those break in and settle. The vibration of the steering wheel is hardly there, but enough to notice and kind of make you a little uncomfortable. Especially for it being a brand new vehicle, and especially with me being that I spent a year on my previous truck chasing down a terrible phantom vibration. Can drive a man to madness. But besides these little issues, that I agree shouldn't be happening with a brand new vehicle, the truck runs exceptionally smooth, on city roads ava highways. That thud between 1st and 2nd gear can be avoided by adapting your driving skills a little bit. It's caused by a rev hang feature they have on the engine. Weird, I know, but it's not that hard to maneuver around, and when done right, that lugging feel between 1,800 and 2,000rpms won't happen. It's all become second nature to me around 3,000 miles. Again coming from a Chevy dude owning a Tacoma, this Tacoma is sweet. I'd drive it over the Colorado any day of you ask me. Love it. Best buy I ever made. Btw the manual chirps in third gear when you haul ass in it, so it's got a damn good decent amount of power behind it. At least the trd off-road does.

Idk about you, but that drive train thud and jerking thing you're talking about is something that's been in every single manual drive pick up truck I've ever driven. It's normal. It's a manual transmission and drive train for a truck. Not a sport car or a Cadillac at that even. I know I said in my last reply that I've been told Toyota's are over priced pieces of plastic, but I do not agree with that. They're put together a lot better than Fords and Chevys I've driven. Little flukes here and there, but not nearly the amount I've felt from other manufacturers.

the alternative is you can get the auto trans which will shift like it needs a double dose of ritalin, the revs will wind up to 3500 before you feel any useful power and good chance it will come with low tranny fluid

That's why I'm very very glad I got the manual lol I feel nothing but power with every gear from 1k rpm all the way to 6k. Idk all the reasons the engine has more power with the manual over the automatic. Maybe because manuals have always been more powerful and faster than their automatic versions. I've seen, several times, an old 1st gen manual v6 whoop the second and third generation in a drag race by a long shot. But the second and third gens have always been automatics. I wanna see that same race with all manuals, and I'm certain the outcome would be different. Only thing I can think as to why a manual feels like it has more power is because you don't have a computer compensating for the small amount of drag on the drive train with manuals as you do with automatics that try to make a smooth ride while compromising power. Do all your power is straight from the engine to the wheels which would cause a bit of a jerky ride here and there, but like I said, that's what you get with manual drive trucks. Nothing but pure straight power to the drive train. This trucks torque curve is amazing. And I don't even know it's top end yet. I hit the governor chip a little over 100 mph and just shifted into 5th gear when the governor chip kicked in, and I wasn't even in 6th gear yet. I'm not exactly sure how fast I was going before the chip kicked in because I don't ever drive that fast, and I'll admit a lot of speed scares me, so I was looking more at the road for safety and cops rather than trying to read my speedometer.

The manual isn't more powerful it's just the rear diff is bigger. Basically like having a bike with bigger cog in the back. You will get more power to the wheels until you are cruising then your legs (or in this case the motor) has to spin more.

Oh yeah I'll admit the gas millage isn't as good as the auto, "if I'm dogging the shit out of it". Idk if it's just me, but I throw it in 6th at 40mph and 45mph, if I'm level or going down hill. Truck handles just fine. Hell it handles fine in 6th at 35mph even. But I prefer to be in 5th at 35mph instead. So when I'm cruising at 40-50mph, which is most of where I live, I get up to 23mpg most of the time. I've gotten it up to 24mpg before. Hasn't happened in a while though. And idk how accurate the mpg readings are with the computer, so correct me if I'm wrong. I know towards the end of my reply, I stated "feels like more power" realizing it technically can't have more power than autos, because it's the same engine. Had no idea I had bigger diff. Is that for both front and rear diffs.? You do know the 2016 manuals are only available in 4x4 right?

That's awesome! But what the hell is DCSB, bro? I have the '16 TRD Off-Road. As far as I know, I'm not sure I have DCSB. And what's your 5 speed regular cab? A Toyota too?? Hell yah it's normal. Idk if this other guy has driven many manual trucks before. I used to own 2 rangers, against Mazda, but same thing. Both 5 speeds, one a B2300 4cyl, and a B3000 v6. That v6 was a fast little fucker. Traded them both for my bad ass taco that I have now lol

And I used to drive a 2000something 6-speed Ford f350 diesel with a grandma gear for 1st for work. Heavy ass clutch, lots of torque, and that even shuddered in the drive train from time to time.

And a 2002, I think, lifted dodge 2500, for work too, with a 5 speed, did the same shit in the drive train. Hell I've also drove a fucking old ass truck, don't know what model or year it was, but all I know it wasn't a synchronised transmission. That even jerked haha. But that's expected with something that old lol
