At 7 million... Dion is going to look fine in a few years. Too many teams and not enough decent defense men. Everyone knows the reason why too. When you're growing up and you're the best player on the team, do you want to play D and score a goal every couple of games or play forward and score a lot more goals? Just ask any kid. That's why so many kids with the skill set that make a good modern defender (fast, good shot, excellent play reading ability) end up playing forward. It's because they want to score, not defend.

 

Vatanen is likely their best dman on the roster and they just locked him up under 5 mil. Kid is a beast. I was saying its a good deal

 

Ah. I misread you then. Honestly I haven't watched the Ducks enough this last year to comment on Vatanen beyond the fact that I know he's an attractive player to many.

In either case, my bad. My basis still stands though. Even mediocre defenders are going to get paid because there just aren't enough young skilled players be raised as defencemen.

 

Loved dion and still do. Not his problem he was handed 7x7 as a #2 dman

 

Same. I had no issues with him. He wasn't the reason why the team was floundering. He did have the C and the number 1 label from the coaches but he was neither. He was still a good player and great person though.

 

I didnt think he was captain material at first but after hearing all the players talk about him, the GMs and coaches talk about him, and seeing the HBO stuff I think he was a good captain

 

I think he was a good captain in the sense that he treated others well and tried to lead by example. However I don't think he was great at motivating individual players every night to give there best.

In all fairness though I think there are more OK captains in the NHL now than great ones. Unless you're a superstar or long term veteran it's hard to lead by example in a way that motivates others. Lots of C's are just handed over to the biggest name or contract on the team. That's what happened to him.
