That is a great price for an ARE canopy. I was getting ridiculous quotes here on Vancouver Island for pretty much any canopy for the tacoma. :( Will need to shop around more, I think.

Action Cap installed today. Dealer forgot to order the compression boot and the pet screens. Other than that, everything seems to be in order

Got my ARE CX installed. Windoors, Regular Front Window, Fabric Headliner, 12V Dome Light, and ordered it with Single T Lock handle on the rear but they gave me the double T which costs more money so I said nothing as I was on the fence about that decision.

One thing I will add, and I'm sure it's been said before.

If you ever have any desire to put roof racks on your cap, get it with the reinforced roof right from the beginning as it is very difficult (nigh impossible) to reinforce an existing cap.

So thanks to Tacoma World someone noticed my new CX canopy did not fit quite right from the pics I posted. Looked into it a bit and they found out they accidentally ordered the ARE CX Canopy that fits a Regular Cab Long Box on a Double Cab Long Box. It does fit differently apparently. So I they have to order a new one. Sigh.

Really? It looked like a good fit to me on the truck compared to some i have seen. Where is the issue.

Where the canopy meets the cab on the regular cab model it is more straight at the top where it ties in. On a double cab there is more rounding so it follows the contour. Here is a pic of mine and and then followed by one that is made for the double cab. See how there is more of a gap on my truck in the first pic and it fits more rounded at the top on the second pic. The second pic is of a members truck from here who's truck is actually featured in the Toyota ARE brochure on the CX page.

AH, well that sucks, at least they are ordering the right one and not putting up a fight about it. Stupid mistake, but it happens and at least it is being corrected.

Couldn't see myself spending $3K on a cap so I shopped around for 2 months for a used one.

Picked up a Leer XL with sliding front window, crank out sides, Thule Rack, interior dome light, and then bought the keyless entry handle and solenoid because the existing handle was seized.

    $750 & $150 for the handle.

I found another one and sent the info to @tacoma16 .

There are used ones out there for second gens if you are patient.

    I vote Other - Used.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: ... and I priced this cap out at a local dealer and it was $2850 plus $450 for the rack and another $200 for the keyless entry = $3500 + tax

Sadly there isn't much of a used market for the 2016's yet.

    Hey everyone,

I've been shopping around in BC, Canada and have narrowed my search down to the Leer 100r and the Leer 180. The added headroom could be a deciding factor as I'm looking for utility over aesthetics (even though the 180 is still a great looking shell). I've been given the following quotes for my DCLB:

100r: $2802.24 installed/including tax with free sliding front window (Leer coupon)
180: $3052.00 installed/ including tax with free sliding front window (Leer coupon)

What are your thoughts on these prices? I've been reading some posts that have me thinking these prices are high and that I could find a better price. I've been waiting for a shell for over a year but used ones are few and my need for one is coming up very soon for a big move.

    Thanks!

Those prices are more or less par for the course. I would check the guy who makes caps in BC, see the earlier post in this thread.

Anyone know what the compression boot that ARE offers does? Talking to a dealer and they offered it but I have no idea what it is neither did the salesman. He thought it was a boot that fit btw the cab and the cap, not sure what it would be there for?

    ANyone able to clarify that.

It fits between the cab and the canopy. I heard they are known to rub against the paint as there is some movement between the bed and the cab. This wears the paint off as it rubs. Not sure why some people would get it.

Ah, k that is kind of what he was explaining, but he wasn't 100% sure. Definitely something I am not interested in having .

    Thanks

Maybe it is junk from the seventies, but the reason I wanted the rubber boot is so that less dirt and water get in between the cab and the cap. The less I need to clean the glass the better. And if it wears the paint off after 10 years, to heck with it. I don't imagine rubber would wear through the paint quicker than that. I don't care if I I have a superficial scratch in a place I never look at, but I like having a clear glass to look through.
