On second thought, no good grades = no video games.

    Unless he'd kill you, again.

So my best friend has a young daughter, coming up on 7 now, but about 18 months ago, her grandma gave her an iPad or soem other tablet without consulting the parents. She became obsessed, wouldn't follow the rules, throwing tantrums, it was ruling her (and their) life. One day dad said, OK, I told you what would happen if you don't follow the rules. Threw it in the trash in front of her. She freaked, went ballistic. A few days later, totally forgotten, lives reclaimed.

All this new parenting situation stuff.

Thinking more, I dunno. My kid definitely wouldn't have his system in this situation, but what to tell him? If you get better grades then you get it back? Then maybe he only does the bare minimum in school for him to be able to play, which is a worse situation.

More complex than I thought, I guess.. But either way, take that fucking thing away! The kids that are obsessed with video games are really unhealthy (so far as I have seen), in a lot of ways.

They're fun, but when they get to the point of it being some kind of video game Jesus then it's too far.

Good point. Damn kid hasn't had it for a minute, and yet his grades didn't improve.

I'm done with that damn thing either goddamn way. But you know, my wife....well, that's another story!

Yeah I think we have steep curves ahead. I've been reading some other folks' issues with keen interest. Krap (Adam) had had a real situation on his hands with a teenage son from his wifes previous marriage, and then his own 3 yo now. And the older son's dad is a POS. Seems here is one in every one of those stories.

You and I are fortunate to be starting "fresh" so to speak. I imagine it will be tough enough just keeping things consistent and square with our wives.

I can't speak on the difficulties a split family adds to that situation, but I'd talk to your wife about it before the kid comes home, if you aren't on the same page about it then I would think that's just going to be a pain in the ass for everybody.

Lot of different relationships involved there it sounds like, so be a united front, even if it's on some other plan of action.

Hopefully she cares as much as you do.

My buddy posted this on his FB page and being we're talking about parenting thought posting this would be appropriate

R.I.P. America !!! You went soft on discipline. You raised the cost of living so high that both parents are always at work, rather than spending time with their children. You took God out of schools. Parents were told 'No you can't discipline your kids'. Kids had rights blah, blah, blah. Well. America!! You shall reap what you sow, and we have lost a whole generation and turned them into selfish, disrespectful brats who have no respect for people, property or authority! Things need to change!

It's definitely a challenging situation! Wife is just way too damn soft as far as I'm concerned!

Kids these days have so many more "amenities" if you will....cell phones, video games, etc....and I think way too damn many of them feel entitled!

Our daughter is just shy of a year but we don't let her get any screen time of any kind. Once they get the phone, iPad, TV, whatever - it's so hard to break them from that.

A friend of ours in NC, both kids were completely immersed in some kind of device all the time. Wouldn't go 10 minutes in the car without screaming for a DVD to play, wouldn't go outside for a walk without dragging whatever game system they had with them, wanted to play games at home all day. The parents didn't care, and the dad would play computer games with them both all the time, for hours. Not kid games either, these were 4 and 7 year olds watching him play his adult games. They'd come downstairs and their faces and eyes would be bright red after watching that for a couple hours and then they'd plop down in front of the TV or laptop and get lost in something else.

Fuck all of that. My kids are going to be dirt babies. So far so good there!

Tonight we got home from the zoo and she went and picked (and fed herself) all the strawberries and played in the garden soil. Hard to beat that.
