I could see that when you have direct hard chrome to hard chrome contact, but did you perform any testing with foreign materials between the two parts? That's where I see the damage happening the most. Someone has junk in their hydraulic fluid, and it makes its way into the equipment. It then gets dragged back and forth across the chrome surfaces by the wear bands and O-rings. That either directly galls the chrome finish, or the O-rings/wearbands are destroyed allowing the chromed parts to come into contact with each other. Then the chrome starts to flake and just makes the problem worse. I also see a lot of ram shafts that are exposed directly to fluids in the well bore and some of that stuff quickly pits the chrome. The QPQ seems to hold up better to that, and in the examples I've seen don't seem to gall as easily. Once again, most of this is just what I have visually witnessed on equipment coming in for repair, so it isn't exactly a scientific test and there are lots of variables that could contribute. With that said I've had pitting on every chrome shock body I've owned

I too did yard work. Mowed an acre and trimmed pecan trees. I have no life.
