BFG Rugged Trail Wear

Anyone else experience crappy wear on the factory BFG's?

Anyone question Toyota about it?

I haven't checked the literature to see abotu a tire wear warranty, but with the treadwear rating (400) on the tire those things should be lasting a bit longer than what I am experiencing> I have about 17000 on the truck and the tires will be lucky to see 25000 until they are on the wear bars.

And I rotated these regularly etc, w/ no smokey burnouts

 

That's how mine wore when I bought the truck with 12k miles. I changed them at 20k so I would have a better tire for winter. After reading the consensus, rugged fails suck, I went and ordered Birdgestone Dueler Revo 2s. Can't complain with my purchase.

 

I had the Dunlop Grantreks on mine from the factory. They were absolute shit. They were basically bald at 25K.

I have BFG AT's now and it is like driving a completely different truck.

I would call Toyota...

 

I don't see why Toyota stuck everyone with crappy ass oe tires, you would think that buy the time you spend damn close to 30K on a truck that they could have done better with the tire options

 

28000 miles and I was running on slicks. I upgraded to firestone destination a/t and I have never been happier. I was talking to a michelin rep after the fact and he said that just about all car mfgs have a deal with all tire makers. What happens is said auto maker does a contract with said tire mfg and builds a sub-par tire, i.e. less tread, and or softer (cheaper) rubber compound and purchases tires in bulk. Wal-mart does the same thing, that is why they will not price match a competitor.

 

the rugged fails that came on the 06 prerunner i bought were shot at 23k miles....they didnt wear well at all...and that includes keeping them balanced and rotated often.

 

My rugged fails seem to be holding up pretty well as far as tread goes. I've got 28k on them and they still look good. Of course you'd think otherwise in the rain and some dirt...

 

I got 35k on mine and still have 57% left. This is per my 30K mile service last month

 

The last 2 trucks I've bought new came with "rugged fails", and both sets were replaced before I hit 1000 miles...

They are crappy tires...

By selling both sets, I managed to get the rubber I wanted for about $300-$500 difference...

But, I agree, you shouldn't have to with a new vehicle... I always just factor new tires into the equation...

 

Guy at a tire shop where I was getting my other car's directional treads remounted to rotate side/side (I've got some lowering spring related camber issues that alignment shops claim they can't fix) mentioned to me that OEM tires usually have among the highest markups as well. I mentioned that the Toyo Proxes I replaced the mediocre stock bridgestones with were far better tires and cost about 20-30% less, and he hit me with that one. I think they count on most people not knowing (or caring) much about tires, or figuring the engineers at the car company know better than they do (and assuming that the engineers' first choice for tires made it past the accountants and managers); even had the service manager at a dealer tell me "tires are tires" once.

 

+1. My Dunflops are horrible in ice and snow. I don't dare go off road with these things. New tires are on my to do list next year.

 

one ride in the snow and I odered my new tires for the DC sport. the factory Dunlops shouldn't be allowed on a vehicle where it snows.

Went with 265-70-17 Cooper S/T what a difference in the snow, cant wait to try them in the mud next.

 

One thing to note, Toyota does not warranty the tires, BFG does. I had mine replaced due to failing road force balance testing at 6,000mi. By the rating, I had already used over 30% of the tread. Almost all highway driving. Bought the BFG AT KO's... now I'm at 33k with probably about 40% tread left. (I drive hard, damn near peal the tire every time I start from zero )

 

i think all tires that come on new cars nowdays suck pretty much...lol...they are just average tires for the most part

 

My dunlops made 500 miles and thats just cause I was waiting on the ordered Nittos to come in. I took them to the Duck club a couple times and it was light mud and I felt like the tires were slipping the whole time. From what I read the rugged trails are much better

 

Mine made it until 38K. I never rotated them because I always wanted to replace them from day one after reading all the negative reviews on Tire Rack. They wore uneven to say the least. The outer portion of the front tire wore out a lot quicker than the middle of the tire. I replaced them with Bridgestone Revo AT/2's. Much better ride and wet weather handling.

 

Hearing all this stuff about the OEM tires on our Tacomas makes me think about my '89 Toyota truck. It came with Dunlops. They were great tires at that time and I got 60K out of them. The BFG's on my 08 Taco have 8K and look like they make 10K if I'm lucky.

 

yeah new cars and trucks used to come with good tires on them that seemed to last forever...i guess it's one way they are trying to keep costs down nowdays

 

Sounds like under-inflation.

I got rid of my rugged fails at 18k miles. Got the truck with 11k miles and they were pretty much gone by the time I changed them. Not to mention how poorly they performed off road and on any kind of slick surface be that pavement or dirt. One of the happiest days of my life getting rid of those things
