oh yeah... i have $20k right now for a down payment. but on my income, i can only afford a 130k home. the resellers around here all buy them before I get a chance to make an offer just so they can turn them around for an additional 30%. it sucks.....

Lol +1. This place is a miniature vacation from the bullshittery being spewed from both sides. We have enough already to argue about as it is.

It seems everytime I want to do high dollar mods to my truck, my mortgage is due. Keeps me in check lol. Housing prices in CA look real similar to here in HI. Must be the weather

Try my area for real estate, 20% increase in the last year and rising, craziness for those coming in. Average price 1.2 million for a tear down. Next door neighbour put their house up on the market and sold same day for 20% over asking with multiple offers, insane!

Not that bad at all. Was in Irvine not to long ago. Don't miss the cookie cuter atmosphere and those prices at all.

I wouldn't call the people in the Bay Area rude. I've lived all over the country and most of the people here are friendly and nice, and it's one of the most tolerant and open-minded parts of the country.

Been in MA all my life and Cali is the one place I think is more insane for housing prices.

Bought my house in 2004 for 250k from family and it was a dump..as was anything in that range. I've done a total gut and reno on every room but the bathroom, which I'm in process of now..it was done 15 yrs ago but winter plus people not doing things right forced my hand. Sided and shingled the outside too among other things. 1100 sq ft, 2/3 an acre. Not in a crazy high or low town either.

Sad part is right now I'm estimated at 260k thanks to buying when I did. UGH.

Long range plan when my parents are no longer around is to move to the Carolinas. Right now my equity in this home would buy the same house there outright, not a bad idea.

it's like half a mil in Honolulu for a shack. We just down sized sold our home for 1.1mil in September 2015 but bought in 2008 for 635,000 in one of the nicest communities. It took my friend a year he kept getting out bid or hit with cash offers its crazy how hard it is to find a house here.

The best part of California is the fact I do not live there! I can't believe what homes go for there.

normally I wouldn't advocate spending on money on mod's when there's an option to buy a long term investment like a house but...Cali tends to buck that advice

Yes, they are the most tolerant open minded people, just as long as you fall into the proper categories. As for being nice, yeah they aren't new Yorkers, but they're about as bad as I've seen it.

It makes me ill to learn that people in my town and surrounding towns (of similar standing) people pay more in rent by far for a small 2 bedroom than my mortgage.

Agree with everything everyone has said. The only reason I moved to Northern California was because it pays the best in the country for what I do for a living (and I'm not in IT or anything tech related). I'm here to get paid and save my money. Yes, it's super crowded, but it's temporary for me, and the added benefits are there's tons of culture here, diversity, tons of great music, amazing camping, hiking, surfing and amazing scenery. A place is what you make it, but despite the crowds and traffic and high cost of living, I'd rather be here than New Jersey.

Makes sense, you go where the money is. I nearly moved to Florida when I was 25..glad I didn't b/c the girlfriend and I didn't work out. Still want out of MA between high cost of living and winters..

To each his/her own. I've lived in NYC, Philly, NJ, Colorado, Florida and Southern and Northern California and traveled cross country many times. Regardless of where you live, if you go at it with a shitty attitude then you'll have a shitty experience. Trust me, I don't fall in line with the way most people here in the Bay Area live or what they believe in, yet I'm having a great time living here. Have a shitty closed-minded attitude and you'll be miserable anywhere you live. For the record most New Yorkers are cool too, it's the people who relocate there from other places who think you have to be a dick to live there and assume that attitude.

Plus, the views from my front windows aren't too bad either. I have a clear view during the day of San Francisco, Marin, Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. For now it will have to do until I save enough loot to buy a tiny piece of land and put a literally tiny house on it (500sq ft.)
