That's good to know too... how close is "close range" in that scenario? And you wouldn't put much faith in a .45 against a bear? Sorry for all these stupid questions... clearly I have a little more research to do.

I'm a HUGE believer in capacity over caliber. I own all 9mm and probably always will. (semi auto, I have a .44 and. 357)

As far as a bear goes you definitely need a monster round. 9 or 45 won't do a whole lot unless you shoot a whole lot.

Do some research. FBI has put out multiple studies pointing that there is almost no difference between 9 and 45. AND in SOME cases the 9 actually would have more stopping power. This in reference to velocity and whatnot. Do some googling, you find a lot of useful stuff.

Or a 500S&W revolver. That's a bear gun you can carry haha

Yes like Asher said, don't forget you'll get a lot more capacity with 9mm.

Better to ask what I have not done.
Ive heard that the 9mm is the round that will just punch through every thing? And why not 40s&w you get a little more knock down then the 9 and you have more capacity then the 45. I carry 357 mag for bear. And bullets have to do a lot with their terminal velosity and what happens when it hits. :)

If you quit frequenting those kinds of establishments, maybe you wouldn't run into so many angry bears :notsure:

Shoot what you can hit with reliably and under stress. Screw everyone's opinions on capacity, caliber. If you can't put rounds on target at the ranges you expect to use it and at the firing rate you'd want under stress and adrenaline then carrying is damn near worthless.

I carry bear spray for bears and a gun for the 2-legged threats but that's just me.

I carry a G19 and a G42 depending on the season and how I and dressing. I am not a Glock fan boy just think they are the best compact autos for CCW. For the woods I have a Rem 870 tactical in our trucks and a S&W 329 for my hip. My wife carry's a S&W 642LS in the city and a Ruger GP101 in the woods. I the end it will depend on many circumstances and you will have to find what works with you.

By the way I agree with @ashrr213 with capacity in the city as well as over penetration. In urban gun fight you will be on the defensive so there will be cover in most cases and you will be on the move protecting your cover. In the woods go revolver. Ultimate in reliability and stopping power. If a big cat or bear are charging you might be luck to get off two aimed shot and they better hit hard. Plus you can load a snake shot for the first shot. I like this option for warning a bear to go away or killing snakes with out worrying about deflections.

If you are being attacked by a cat, I guarantee you will not get a shot off. You will be dead before you hit the ground. They are stalkers and attack from behind. Ive been stalked by a mountain lion after an elk kill. I got half the elk out before we saw the prints, and we left the other half for the lion.

Bears on the other hand are deterred more by noise. If you are a ninja you might see them, but just talk when you hike and carry pepper spray. There are only Black bears in CO right now, so noise will scare them away. If you are in grizzly country and in the wilderness, a hand gun wont do much unless you are trained at shitting your pants, closing your eyes and shooting them in the eyes at the same time.

Protip: Don't roll around in bbq sauce when camping and CO wildlife will pretty much leave you alone.
