something you might want to check , as your failure is on the full down stroke, im betting that your over extention is caused from the light racing arm, and shock combo, the light racing arm has no limiter,[stop] to control droop , now the 5100 has more travel then the stock shock.
check your springs to see if you have wear on them from the ball joint touching it.
if you do have any of the paint rubbed off, if so then you can installed limiting straps to control droop[ installed on mine]
or get a shock that stops droop ?

Interesting, did not think about the UCA/Shock combo allowing the droop to go to far, I'll have to look at that. Thanks.

Wouldn't this be a common issue then? Seems like the extended travel icon setup (or any other complete kit with greater travel and UCAs) would need limit straps if this were the case.

If you break you CV and have no spare, you could of just pulled the shaft out and left both ends in (one in the diff to prevent fluid coming out and one in the hub optional) this would of got you home.

You don't need limit straps if you are running a front sway bar, end of story. Looks like you have yours on so the too much down travel debate is not what caused the CV to break. After you get home and axles replaced I would check for cv binding as suggested in down/up travel as well as turning the wheel left and right something doesn't sound right.

Well, doesn't look like the UCA was hitting the spring.

We tried to do that to get home, but the wheel bearing went out after about 100 miles (of very careful driving)

Maybe you had bad wheel bearings which caused the CV axle to break? The CV axle doesn't hold the front suspension together...

Bearing could be the culprit as the initial CV went out on the lower joint.

    As of now:

I have a new wheel bearing, new CV and no Driver side spacer

Also, After closer inspection, the CV installed in CO appears to be inferior. Shaft Has a smaller diam than the original.

I'm thinking now that the first CV failed due to combination of wheelbearing and 887+spacer (without the spacer I can't tell that it is leaning at all)

2nd CV went out due to inferior quality part mixed with a bearing already on it's way out and also not exactly smooth roads.

Did you replace bearings on both sides? I would have. Cycle the suspension and turn the front wheels as we suggested to make sure there is no binding. Looks like you are on the right path.

I have seen jeep bearings start to squeal and then after 5 miles of trying to get back to camp tire almost falls off completely. Once the bearing starts to go it doesn't take long.

Just one side, the R side has no play at the wheel, and just the right amount at the front diff.

We will definitely be conducting multiple tests close to home prior to going out like that again and next time an extra cv is coming along.

We were wheeling pretty carefully, but if the bearing was on it's way out, nothing we could have done. I guess.

It may only come into play with different shocks..my Rcd shocks must have lots of down travel cause if I raise a front wheel off the ground the light racing arm. At the ball joint would hit the spring...straps fixed it for me
