Grinding gear noise again :( [video linked]

hi everyone,

Today while pulling into my work parking lot, I heard my truck's gears grinding again . I had my dashcam rolling as always, and you can hear it too at 05:14:05 (10 seconds). It's audible, but not as loud as it felt to me, the truck vibrated a bit (could feel on the steering wheel).

At the time of the grinding gears, my truck was rolling perhaps at 5 miles an hour, as I was taking a turn. This is the same truck that Toyota kept for 29 days earlier on diff leaking and trans grinding issue that I had reported earlier . Toyota corp gave me an extended 8yrs warranty on the truck after I picked up my vehicle.

Can I please have some advice, tips before I take my vehicle back to Toyota again. sigh! This will be my 4th time taking my brand new truck back to the service center after purchase . I have closer to ~1940 miles on my odometer at the moment.

 

I know what that sound is! I figured it out since mine makes the same sound.

The rear U-joint near the rear diff contacts the gas tank skid on a bumpy left turn like what was in your video. Really kind of annoying, I trimmed the skid a little bit and the noise occurs much less frequently now.

Edit: Since yours is a Sport, it might actually be hitting the gas tank..slightly more serious. You should check and see if there are any contact marks on the plastic there. My skid plate was a little frayed where it rubbed.

 

Dang E you have had no luck at all! See is Aliu is correct, check for marks. If nothing take the video and go directly to the service manager. Take them for a ride to see if you can get it to happen again.

 

That's from the ABS pump and completely normal. Especially when you go through an incline somewhat at speed. (according to your dash cam, you were going through the driveway at 20mph)

I know, I can't tell you why the ABS pump makes that noise when ABS isn't quite activated yet, but it's normal.

I'm not so sure that was the ABS. No reason that should of activated the ABS. Plus she would of got the warning light and beep on the dash, which she didn't report nor did you hear on video

 

Mine has done what I at least think is the same thing 3 or 4 times. Each time it has occurred to me, I was making a sharp turn to the right with a dip in the road. It has happened at the same location each time. It is hard for me to purposely reproduce it so I have not even bothered with bringing it to the dealer.

 

Again, I can't tell you why the ABS pump activates - it's not just for braking. You won't get a beep nor will you get anything on the dash. It just comes on when you take a sharp bump like that. It could be preemptive traction control for all I know..

I've even included a video with crawl control (which uses the ABS pump) and you can hear it's the same noise as the OP's video.

Like I said. works as designed.

 

The Jeep I used to have kicked on the ABS on a sharp turn with a bump that I take frequently. So if it is the ABS it isn't just a Tacoma thing.

 

I got to check if there's something under my truck. it's dark now, but I will try to look tomorrow. I don't know.. not feeling very good about this. I do plan to give the dealership a phone call tomorrow >:-/

 

I didn't see/ hear any ABS light or warnings. And I don't know, ABS coming on won't be feeling/ noise coming from under the trans area would it?

 

It's not ABS activating per se. It's sound from the pumps. I don't know why either, but it's normal. Did you even check the 2 links I posted??

 

Yes,.. I did read and check them. It could be that.. definetly sounded like the first link. The second one at 6minute mark, the brakes turning on and off,.. my truck isn't an off-road model., its a 4x2 sport trd model. And I don't think mine was in any off-road like condition to turn on ABS brakes that way.. also i heard the noise from under the truck (beneath me), not from the front, under the hood area. It sounded like gears grinding when I drive a manual stick shift and when trying to shift a gear wrongly into a gear position.

Your truck does not have to be the OR model. The example I provided was just showing you it's the same ABS pump noise. If you read the 2 threads posted, the sound comes on exactly if you hit a driveway at speed at an angle.

Again, i'm not saying it's confidence sounding, nor can I explain why the ABS pump kicks in, but it's there and will happen on EVERY '16 truck. Mine included.

 

My truck has done the same thing twice, doing the same thing you were doing (making a turn and going through a bump or dip). Had me concerned but that was a couple weeks ago and hasn't done it since.

 

Almost positive it is the abs activating due to losing traction taking a corner with a bump at that speed. Once one wheel's wheel speed sensor senses the slightest and i mean slightest amount of slip, it will pulse the abs at an incredible rate which sounds much like gears grinding. The taco has one of the most intrusive stability control systems ive encountered and ive literally driven thousands of cars its activated on. Also very loud abs in the taco, but nothing out of ordinary.

Didnt read how much doubt there was before but consider this: 90 degree corner with a bump. Took the corner a bit quick, was on the brakes while cornering. Rf of truck is loaded in that case, left front tire has minimal traction until you go over the bump. More weight transfers to rf tire as would happen while turning over a bump. For a brief second the lf wheel was either in the air or light enough your brake force caused it to lock. Except cars dont lock, they activate abs. Done and done.

Unless you were full throttle through that corner, you were not putting any extreme stress on the drivetrain which would cause it to act up or "grind gears"

 

ABS for sure, it's the sound of the traction control kicking in and perfectly normal.

 

When this has happened to me,my brakes were not even applied. I was leaving a stop sign and making a right turn on to another road. Vehicles I have driven in the past have an ABS light that flashes on the dash when the system is activated. This did not happen when I have had that noise. I personally describe it as more of a tire rub feeling,not gear grinding. To me it sounds and feels like a tire rub but I am completely stock. The sound in the video is just like the sound I hear though.

It's Definitely the abs sensing slippage.. This happened to me on my driveway in slippery snow, which stopped me from going up the hill.. I thought i was bottoming out on something. I was freaking out and finally went up in 2 wheel drive and slid down the hill and the brain light came on... Turn off the traction control by holding the button by map lights... you probably don't need it on in the summer anyways.
