My Differential Breather Mod Photos

This whole thread's opening post is about the mod of using a two-way breather on the end of a tube coming from where the spring-loaded one-way vent was located.

 

Just wondering if the same part#'s would apply to the 3rd gen? Anyone know?

 

^ I just did mine yesterday and can confirm the part numbers work on my 3rd gen. I located my breather into the drivers side bed compartment.

 

Perfect! I'm going to put mine in the bed compartment as well, just like OP did. Now I just need to order the parts. Thanks

 

is it the same for a 2015? i might need this in the unlikely event the malls become flooded

 

Thanks for this write up. been looking around and a lot of ppl seem to run the fuel filter at the end with nothing else.. just didnt make sense. This thread gave me that peace of mind I was going in the right direction.
ordered my parts for both my trucks getting it done asap!

 

Nice photos and instruction... Just finished my breather. Didn't wanna drill any holes though, so I just zip tied it way up into the driver rear panel by the bed rail... Worked out nice!

Just ordered the Breather and Union. Headed to HD for the hose and clamps.

 

Anyone have the thread size for the breather? Also, why did you buy a new breather?

If you thread an open breather nipple into the diff, run a hose up, and put the Factory breather valve in the end of the hose on the elevated side, why would this require a new breather? I'm still missing something.

Open nipple threads into axle housing where one-way oem breather is.

Connect tubing and run to desired location.

Connect the oem 2-way breather to the end of new tubing.


Basically the 1-way doesn't let the axle breathe freely and creates pressure on the axle seals. If axle is at operating temp and dunked in water the temp inversion and stubbornness of the 1-way breather makes it suck water in at the seals. The 2-way breather stops this and takes any pressure build off the axle seals.

 

Just wondering if you have a canopy would running the breather to the inner storage box or cubby hole result in any smells of diff oil in the truck bed if it vents. Would running it to an exterior point like the gas cap option be better. Thoughts?

 

If you have shell I'd run it to gas door. I ran mine there even tho I don't have shell. Not sure how much if any fumes there would be even if it was sent to cubby............

I have been everywhere looking for the tubing Lowes,Home Cheapo. I would red or yellow does anyone have any extra they want to sell or give away Unchained style??

 

Hmmm...yellow like the kind used for air compressors? Wonder if that would work? I used black fuel line on mine.

Yes, you missed the point of doing this at the very beginning... the "breather" that comes on the rear diff is NOT a breather. It is a one-way spring loaded vent. It can cause a vacuum in the diff when you enter water, and that water can get drawn into the diff through the axle. It happened to me when the truck was only a few months old. SO, DO NOT USE what the factory put on the rear differential!

The front diff has a REAL breather, at the end of a tube, up high (near the battery).

We are installing the same kind of breather as the front has, but on the back, and up high on the end of a tube... just like the front one.
