I've seen some posts on some older threads that ARB recommends removing the third leaf on the Dakar packs instead of removing the top overload spring. Does anyone know why this is? I am wanting to upgrade my suspension/increase load carrying capacity but unlike everyone else in the world I am actually trying to keep the lift height to a minimum. I am thinking 884s and Dakars, but I need to know which spring to remove to keep the rear somewhat level with the front.

ARB does recommend removing the third from the top.
I removed the top overload to keep spring rate and drop the lift height, as that top overload is a thick mofo.
It is not installed (yet), so I can't tell you much about the right feel. Sorry.

I am not sure why they only recommend doing the third leaf and not the top overload.

Ok, I've planned to do what you did. I am doing all this to increase capacity so I would very much like to keep the spring rate. And it sounds like I can shave 5/8 - 3/4" off the total lift height by taking out the top overload.

Yeah, that top overload is a beast. Do you have your pack yet?

I dont no, I had considered doing airbags instead but it seems like a bandaid rather than a solution to the problem, which is weak rear leaf springs.

I've been though the OME thread and saw conflicting info so I just figured I would ask here.

I think you are making a better decision with a new pack, if that is in the budget.
I really don't think taking the top overload is going to cause any issues. The leafs are heavy as hell. Would take a shitload of weight to max the springs out, imo. I don't feel I will ever put that much in the bed or on the truck to max them.
I bet that is why ARB says to remove the third leaf from the top instead of the top overload. More of a security thing.
I can post up some pics if you want to see them up close. Let me know.

I'm interested in this also. As I was debating between the single AAL and the full leaf pack.

I would love to see that if you have pictures handy. Thanks! I'm hoping the 884s keep my front right at 1.75 - 2" higher. I also hope the Dakar minus top overload gives me 2" in the rear. Lot of unknowns, I know every truck is different.

Sure thing. Will get some pics for you.
Think the 884s will work. That is what I was going to go with but then opted to go with the Bilstein 6112s that have a spring already.

How's the ride on those? How much height did you gain? Are you 4x4? I see you have a DCSB OR like mine.

Beautiful. Thanks for this. So the brackets are actually welded or riveted to the bottom overload spring right? I'm glad to hear you say that it would take alot to get the Dakars to ride on the Overload. I am hoping the Dakar is exactly what I am looking for. Just ordered the 884/Dakar kit from Wheelers!

So, are you going to remove the overload spring and install these yourself?
Please post your opinion of this setup when done. As I'm looking at doing the same thing.
    Thanks

And here is one of the reasons why I am taking the top overload out.

Sucker is nearly a 1/2" thick.

Yes I am. I'll probably do a full write up once it's all installed.

So how much lift did the Dakars give you sans top overload?

Don't know yet. They are waiting (patiently) to go in.
    :D
Just waiting for one more component to arrive.

I am shooting for about 2" though.

When I talked to Dan at Wheelers this morning he said I could expect about 2" without the top overload. Fingers crossed.
