Do you have to take the truck to the dealer to have the memory "flashed"? Or is there a way to do it yourself?

The process of "Flashing" is to apply a new image in the ECU Flash, this essentially is the parameters etc that the ECU will operate under. I would suspect this would be a dealer managed installation.

Yea I had dealer do it, they have a fancy computer that takes 30 seconds to flash your ECU, if you dont find a way to have them do it for free under warranty then it costs $60...

Respectfully how do you figure that they don't run "jack"
Never a good way to put things in an open forum without qualification, my apologies as it is not the early 80's, 90's anymore..
From power up post, self diags, housecleaning and initialization basically the differentiation is the human element vs mechanical. The ECU stands to do nothing more than wait to receive input and provide a response, some sub routines are more active than others, such as the most CPU intensive like the GPS and related functions, (believe it or not) all other sub routines in the code are there to maintain status, error reporting and again cleanup, others calculate deviations and make real time adjustments to critical features in the entire vehicle. Human element items, unlock and open door, hit start button, use ECT, Lights etc everything is background just like these ASIC's as they once were referred to operate.

One of the interesting items I was able to find is that most automotive micro controllers are 32bit but utilize 8 bit instruction code...just to show how much depth they have to use if necessary, but really not required to give a status light of "door opened" etc....

I think the OP's opening statement is fairly accurate as to what a patch is gonna do if and when released. Not 100% fix. If it is that would be wonderful as I am more of an optimist then pessimist but I am a realist.

Some points that I have looked up and basically are on track is that Toyota uses non main stream micro controllers, back in the early 90's there were about 8-10 sought after manufacturers, today there is a multitude, all with different machine code, basically making Toyota's implementation nearly proprietary. Same slow but efficient CAN bus. This may change to an open architecture 32/64 bit bus and use tcp/ip for comm between the modules and other uses.

The ECU's are becoming more interactive and acting more and more like a desktop computer blurring the lines between a controller and a desktop CPU. Such as interactive voice.

Another key features yet to implemented is Flash updates being installed over WiFi, based on error codes, Required updates etc these will eventually have the capability to be installed without you even knowing it or some interactive routine that requires you to acknowledge the fact your gonna get an update. Yet again acting like a "desktop" and involving more of the human element. It would be nice to have more options available for the user in the future beyond some of the timer functions for lights etc...use your imagination...what would you want?

So to blatantly say in an open forum the don't run jack is politically incorrect....the biggest function is providing the system ready to go by checking all systems before you hit the start button, then on to critical operation functions that again have no user input or response, controller. Just my old school of sorting things out at the platform level in this case ECU's.....

I hope @TRDinOhio has some more insight to the resolution and how it manifests itself, without bit mapping info it is hard to decipher integer values at specific memory locations unless you have the inside dirt on what it does.

Amazing to hear that UV erasable EEPROM's are still being implemented at the hardware level, I am glad to know at least you have an inside track at a major manufacturer and are actively engaged in the same endeavors as Yota....the platform may have changed as welll as the code but methodology may not deviate more than the hardware implementation.....for all the end users its the same , they , we just want to see results. Large corporations with a big portfolio and world wide presence I can understand the lag time for release of a patch, but communication to the customers is lacking and it makes Toyota look bad, especially for CSM's having to fudge a response to customers that is unvalidated....

But on the other hand my truck is doing well, lift is in the works, wheels on the way (Method NV 17") and I am concerned with our countries future.... I would have to say most TW members are prepared to protect themselves and family and I would hope they are prepared to defend out country, from what I glean on a lot of pages I thinks so. Stay vigilent.

I post my second amendment sticker with means, hard to see but proud of it.

Quickly move the shifter from D to LEFT AND UP in one movement. It skips 4th gear and stops at 5 if you are down shifting from 6

That would not be by default then would it. It defaults to 4th. Why not 5th?

    5th is an OD gear.
I guess their assumption is, 'why down shift to an OD gear'?

Nothing fancy, yet. Weathertech mats front/back + their mud guards, some reflective striping and custom carpets on the storage bin lids underneath the jump seats.
It's been said there's more computing power in the average car or truck than what was on board an Apollo command module.

When you put it into S mode. I automatically locks out the overdrive gears. This is a annoying feature in all Toyota/Lexus vehicles. I don't see the logic of the transmission downshifting 2 gears on the Highway when you put it in S mode. Then making you manually shift it up gears. Maybe the same person who decided the Tacoma doesn't need seat height adjustors came up with this idea.

I just drive it in S4 under 45 mph around town, letting the truck shift itself 1-4 then bump up to S5 or 6 on the highway depending on speed, traffic and terrain.

Annoyances such as hunting for gears are then mitigated.

Man... so much banter on this thread.

    1) we're all on the same team
    2) no one wants to read your e-arguments since they dont pertain to sh*t
    3) really dilutes the important sh*t being said here

Anyway... I went to the dealership yesterday for 15K service... I can confirm from a Tech that "Toyota is aware of the transmission issues and will have an update soon." Hope this helps.

If you weren't talking about performing the service on this truck then I don't see how you can say that the issues will be fixed with this update.

If someone in here has actually had this "logic update" and it fixed the issues, then I'd believe them.

I don't know how you could have interpreted my post to mean that I thought you were defending Toyota. Especially because it had nothing to do with any of your previous posts in this thread. It had to do with that specific post. That's why I quoted it, chief
