Airbag Light On / Clock Spring?

Ok so my airbag light came on the dash the other day. Did some reading up, checked the connections under the seat and unplugged the batter for 15 minutes. Still in. I read on some threads that if the clock spring went bad I'd have some cruise control issues. I do not have that issue. I have a 2010 TRD Off Road, 70k miles on it. Any advice or direction??

 

Your going to have to pull the codes from it to diag it properly.

 

When it fails it does all kind of crazy things. Check your VIN for recall, if it qualifies, GOTO DEALERSHIP NOW! When mine failed,started with air bag light, I let it go, couple weeks later dash lights looked like a winner on slot machine.

As stated above get the code read and check to see if you are in with the recall for the Spiral Cable recall. There are several things that go through the spiral cable ( The steering wheel Air Bag is one ).

 

Be aware, when my air bag light came on, I pulled the code, the code had something to do with the drivers seat sensor. When the other codes started being thrown, the codes all related to malfunctions of various sensors, systems etc, there is no code for bad spiral cable. When the cable fails, communication is lost or messed up and the computer starts throwing codes.

 

Broke down and took it to the service department yesterday. They couldn't get me in but the service guy asked me if I had happened to have a bigger person in my front seat recently. My good friend did ride with me in the passenger seat last week, and he is pretty hefty so I said yes. He said he knows this sounds weird but bigger people have been known to throw off the sensors in the seats. It could very well just needed recalibrated. So I'm taking it in Friday to get diagnosed.

Luckily my sister works there, so my diagnostics is free and if all it needs is recalibrated, it'll cost $40. Prayers this is all it is!

 

Keep us posted! mine has been on for a while, no recall in Canada on the clock spring but mine came on after I had 2 large guys stacked on the front passenger seat. Maybe its the same issue.

 

I should have it fixed by the end of the week. If this is the problem it's the first I've seen of it. I'll gladly take that over the clock spring.

 

If your included in recall, have it changed. As far as your heavy friend, just ask a friend who has an OBD reader or go to auto zone and ask them to do a reset. If lights come back, you know that your friend had nothing to do with it. And it's free before I'd go give the dealership $40 I'd spend $200-$300 for a decent OBD. I keep mine in my truck 24/7 to diag problems at any time. Recently while needing to finish a 100 mile trip with a blown head gasket, I hooked OBD up, put it in live mode, watched readings as I drove to keep everything out of range where damage could be done. Took some time, but made it. Heads are at machine shop as I type. Maybe it's just me, but I always favor buying tools over paying the dealership

I ran the VIN and they ran it at the dealership. Doesn't effect my truck. I'll print that link off and check the production date of my truck, you may be on to something if it ends up being the spiral cable/clock spring

 

My 2005 had a fail with the clock spring cable.. cost me $400, as there was no recall or TSB yet. My 2010 (hopefully) has a redesigned clock spring cable and won't fail.

 

gupster, how did it turn out? Did they end up changing the spiral cable? Or was it just due to a heavy person messing up sensor?

 

Toyota will pay you back if you have receipt for fixing your 2005.

 

I am sure the receipt was gone when I traded in the 2005 for the 2010. Thanks, anyway!

 

Maybe ask the dealership if they still have it on file? $400 is worth a 1 min phone call

 

Sorry for the late reply guys, had a long but fun holiday weekend. I took it in Saturday morning. I happened to know the technician working on it as we graduated together. Turns out the sensors in the passenger seat needed recalibrated where my friend who is on the hefty side sat in it. Took care of the problem and I walked out having to pay ZERO!

So moral of this story: if your airbag light comes on, and you've recently had someone heavy in your passenger or even driver seat that normally isn't in it...have the sensors checked for calibration!
