How is it that this pop/country crossover stuff is so popular? Take Florida Georgia
Line's song Cruise. It was played on a ton of stations up here, half of which were not Country stations. I'm not knocking them, I do like some of their songs. I just want to figure out how we go from Hank to here?!

I think it has to do with who is buying the music. Everything now seems to be targeted to a much younger audience than it was back then. Also, for better or worse genres evolve over time and sometimes become a shadow of their former selves. I blame Kenny Chesney. I don't have any concrete reasons for doing so though. He just seems like a good scapegoat.

It's definitely become country light. Maybe even "near" country.

I happened to hear about 30 seconds of this the other day. Most of the newer stuff I can at least listen to. I couldn't listen to this, though, it's that bad:

To counter that, I did find this in my stack of Vinyl the other day. It's very good, has a lot of Willie on it:

Pretty good. I would bet The Band was an influence on his style.

I listen to some of everything all the time. But one of my favorite Country singers right now is Jason Aldean.

I like him as well. I listened to an interview with him, where he talks about his personal evolution in country music. It gave me more respect for him.

I tend to gravitate towards 90s country.

Any particular stand outs? I am pretty big Tim McGraw fan. I think he is well on his way to being a country music icon.

I can dig 90s country. Mark Chesnutt, Joe Diffie, Tracy Lawrence, Sawyer Brown. . . they all had some awesome songs.

Haven't read the previous 6 pages but, as far as artists producing new music right now, I love:

    Sturgill Simpson
    Jason Isbell
    Cody Jinks
    Whitey Morgan
    Chris Stapleton
    Cody Johnson

Stapleton is the only one I have heard on the radio, and I think he gets the airplay because he has written so many pop country hits for other artists. Country music, at least what's played on the radio, has become more entertainment than expression. It's "fun" to listen to when you're drinking beer, but lacks any real substance.

Yall should look into Texas/ Red Dirt country. These guys try and stay away from the nashville guys. A few good ones are Zane Williams, William Clark Green, Roger Creager, Turnpike Troubadours and many more. They are putting out new music that sounds nothing like Luke Bryans bullshit

Cody Jinks and Cody Johnson are two awesome artists! So glad other people listen to them!
