As crazy as this sounds, I would have even taken Subban on the Bruins, although Marchand probably wouldn't ;). PK can play.

I get what Montreal is thinking. Weber is a here and now player where Subban still has to grow. Plus the Montreal fan base turned on Subban like they do on all their players who aren't natural francophones so trading him appeased them. However the problem is that Montreal has lots of young players and had a wider window with Subban to win. With Weber they now have to risk diminishing returns starting right now just as their core gets into their most productive years. It's a bad move from their position of strength to a position of weakness IMHO.

Weber will be fine for the next five years or so. Its after that the contract will begin to be a problem. I think he is 31 and has like 10 years left on the deal. Maybe they can or will buy him out when it comes time. There had to have been something going on behind the scenes that they aren't talking about for the Habs to trade Subban.

Well they are getting there wish then, though from the reports I have been hearing that is is not the common sentiment. Time will tell, but it looks to me like Bergevin just hung himself

32 IIRC for this season. He throws a lot of big hits. That's a lot of miles on his frame. Who knows how much prime time he has left. All I know is that it is less the Subbans.

They started what like 10-0 last season and then absolutely tanked?

They lost their future HOF goalie early on in the season and the whole team tanked. Actually for the first half of the season the team looked okay and Subban was in the Norris running. Then the entire team went on the longest losing streak in a long time, franchise history I think, and they never recovered. You can't blame that on Subban. If people are they are missing the glaring holes in the rest of Montreals lineup that have been covered by Carey Price. They live and die with him. If he gets hurt again Weber won't fix it.

    Bingo.

I wouldn't be surprised though if they go on another run into the 2nd round or even the conference finals behind Price. Then all of the Quebec media will praise the move as being one more step towards a cup. Win-win for ownership in the short term if they get the spin right.

Weber will be the first guy hung though when the fans turn again.

It is always possible, but I think they will need a lot more than Price. As they keep shrinking goal equipment we may also begin to see more goals

edit : I look forward to hearing Weber's french

I heard the compensation would be 4 first round picks for Trouba at that price? There's no way that rumor could be true if that's the case, Bruins would be insane. Did Edmonton even get that much for Gretzky?

My understanding is that rumour is based upon a contract that is set up and loaded in such a way as to make it suicide for the Jets to match it. It ultimately has to do with a lot of money and how it is paid out.
There was an entertaining article in the Free Press today about the Jets trading Trouba to an opponent in Bostons division.
Trouba is great and all, but he is a 5 Million Dollar guy on the generous side. His number have been in decline since his rookie year. The Bruins are clearly desperate. They have no assets to actually make a trade so are rumoured to be ready to do something retarded.

Webers deal fucks the Preds when he retires though. 24 mil between the years left. So retire at 38 and it's 12 mil cap hit for Preds for two years lol. Also Habs paid Weber 8 mil signing bonus today....that shows you how bad they wanted Subban gone....fuck

Watched Trouba live in Feb. He is a beast. Way more effective then Byfuglien and only behind Myers as their best dman IMO. But after seeing Vatanen at 4.9 or so and Rielly at 5, I don't think you could pay him much more because he's in the same category. I might be biased but I would take Rielly over him

Rielly has far more upside for sure. I don't think we've even seen close to Rielly's peak. At the IIHF tourny he was a beast and on the ice for every critical situation.
