...so after several unsucessful attempts to clear a toilet with first a plunger, then a drain snake, my three year old informs me that she flushed an apple down the toilet. The snake only goes about 18" in then stops. Any ideas that don't involve removing the toilet?

    getting there....
hate to say it, but if you cant find a snake that is a lil stronger and will go alot farther in then that......gonna have to turn the water off/drain the tank..........and yep...pull the toilet and clear the pipe that way.

siphon the water out and then drop a hamster in there.

On the bright side, toilets are not that bad, just make sure you buy a new wax seal. And remove the old one. Check out lowes for a different snake.

You will have to remove the toilet to get the apple out. It's probably wedged sideways up inside the toilet, turn the toilet on its side and look up from the bottom. You should be able to see it. Don't forget a new gasket. Good luck.:)

If there is an apple in their, you probably should remove the toilet and try to fish it out. Not a pleasant job but sounds like it needs doing. Before you start, make sure you go to a hardware store and get 2 new bolts and a new beeswax ring. Turn off the supply valve and flush it to empty the tank, then bail out the bowl. Take off the 2 nuts and lift the toilet off. When you're ready to replace it, clean out the old wax seal and replace the toilet. Have fun!

I think you are going to end up tearing out the crapper and bobbing for apples. Sorry man.
The apple has swelled up a bit by now.

She must have taken a lesson from my son :p. He did that when he was about that age. They didn't remove the toilet, he use a snake that grabbed it and brought it out. I'd try a longer snake, with a barb on the end. Unless you really jammed it in there with the plunger, then you're SOL....

If it was me I'd buy a new toilet. If an apple can't clear then what happens the next time you go to a mexican buffet? The toilets I installed in my house will flush a bucket of golf balls or so they advertise. I haven't tried it yet.

In all seriousness yes you will have to pull the toilet. Getting the apple out shouldn't be too bad unless somebody sent a chocolate chaser not knowing the apple was in there.

You could demo the floor out beneath the toilet, belt down the pipe and extract the apple from below.

    Explosive demolition could be used.

i wonder if insurance would be willing to cover that? come to think of it... that might be pretty funny telling the story of how you blew up the whole side of your house cuz an apple was stuck in the toilet.
