Under Body Rust... What is acceptable?

    First off, I have very few gripes about my TRD Sport 4x4. Overall, she has been great for my needs... camping, rafting, hauling landscaping materials and general commuting. I have 4,500 miles on the odometer and will be taking her in for my 5k service soon. However, I want some opinions before I do so I am more prepared for my discussion with the service tech.

    I have noticed some rust on both sides of the under body below the passengers door and drivers door. Looks like the black coating they put on didn't entirely cover all the under body and has allowed the metal to be exposed to moisture and magnesium chloride (during winter months). Currently, it seems to just be on the surface and on welds. I am not deeply knowledgeable about cars, though owning this truck has increased my desire to learn much more.

    So, is this rust acceptable?
    What questions or expectations should I have for the service department?
    Anyone else experiencing this on your truck?

    I would take more pictures of all the affected areas and start a claim with Toyota corporate. At least you will have documentation and a "paper trail" beginning at 4500 miles. Make sure you have your tech document it.

    Toyota of course will claim its normal, but when it gets worse, at least you have it documented.

    Based on a study conducted by CDOT (Colorodo Dept. of Transportation) MgCl is corrosive and I would suggest that any exposed metal will be an issue. Conclusion from the report:

    I remember when I spotted a 2016 Tacoma with 6 miles on the odometer at a car show with rust. The fanboy deniers on the forum said it was "bronzing" and not rust. Then I get laughed at for checking underneath of new vehicles before buying them.

    That's normal. My CA truck looks exactly the same. I'm not concerned.

    I'm at 5000 miles and the bolts by the control arms look like they have 20 years on them already. When I would work on my 15 year old ford (always a CA truck as well) there was hardly ever any rust.

    I think it is just a Toyota thing....I'm not too concerned, but then again I live in CA.

    Interesting report. I am in Colorado and know CDOT loves to apply mag chloride even if there is only a hint of a storm coming. However, the findings of the report are that MgCl2 is less corrosive than NaCl in arid conditions. Colorado is definitely a dry climate. While we have had quite a bit of humidity this year, we typically have very low relative humidity. Wonder if CDOT took this into consideration when choosing a deicer and that is why they choose MgCl2 or if it is all based on the price of the deicer? Thanks for the info.

    I'm telling ya. Dealer isn't going to care about the tiny bit of surface rust. Just take care of it yourself annually and your frame won't end up like swiss cheese. At this point, my truck has more rattle can than factory powder coat.
