Not sure if serious... Owned several Tacomas (1st and 2nd gen's) and rode in the 3rd gen quite extensively. I'd prefer to revert back two generations for my preferred Tacoma.

    1) yes, transmission issues due to low fluid from factory, along with one complaint about "low oil pressure" at a steep grade hill, and one about a stuck dipstick. Small complaints like wind howls and vibrations. Most, if not all are being worked out.

    2) price is in the same ballpark to F150s for a number of reasons. Toyotas are more expensive because of the reliability urban legend. Ford has more factories that pump out F150s all day long.

To chose a vehicle is up to your expectations of said vehicle. If you want a nice daily driver, I'd say go with the another Fullsize. The ride is much smoother, the interior is roomier, more towing capacity/hauling capacity, getting same MPGs if not more than Taco, etc.

If you want a mid sized for some odd ball reason, Toyota is the obvious choice. Maybe fullsizes are too much to think about when daily driving, maybe you'd like to go OffRoad and explore with confidence and ease, whatever it may be, the taco is the easiest winner out of all midsizes.

The only thing I gripe about with the Toyota community, especially the Tacoma community is the argument of Resale. If you are going to drive a vehicle, you might as well enjoy it. Caring about resale is caring about the next guy that'll own the vehicle, no problem in that, but you're the one driving the vehicle from now to then.

Lesson learned and words chosen wisely will get you far. Unfortunate you had to endure some financial hardship and trade down. I did what I did and traded in for a car, albeit a absolute thrill every time I drive it be FBI don't need the utility of a truck at this juncture in my life.

I didnt plan on selling my first gen but I tore my left MCL and meniscus so I had to sell it to get an automatic. For me the resale argument is not about selling and more an indicator of a quality truck. But sometimes shit happens and its good to know these trucks are worth $$$.

I can't speak to point number 1 but I can tell you that if you can get a new crew cab F150 in four wheel drive for the 34 to 38K that a Tacoma would cost you should probably jump on it because it won't last long. A quick trip over to the Ford website revealed that the cheapest crew cab F150 4WD you can get will start at 36,565 before options and that is for a based out XL with ugly steel wheels, 3.5 V6 and no options on it. From there the starting price jumps to 40 grand for the XLT. For 36.5 in a Tacoma you're going to get a lot more feature content and a far more capable off road vehicle as the F150 is hamstrung with the same problem that all crew cab full size pickup trucks have and that is terrible break over angle. I recently had the opportunity to drive a crew cab F150 for a full week and what I came away with was the certainty that I wouldn't buy one. They are great for highway cruising. They have a big comfortable and quiet cabin. What they absolutely suck at is around town stuff. They are a pain in the ass to park, to get into traffic and to negotiate parking lots with tight turns and narrow lanes. I didn't find the seat to be any more or less comfortable than the Tacoma seats but they absolutely do have better leg room in the back. For my money the Tacoma is the better choice unless you just really like driving a land barge. If you want a truck for it's off road capability the Tacoma is easily the best choice on the market. It's just the right size to be a very capable off road truck.

I was going to say something similar. A similarly equipped f150 as my truck would be north of 40k. You can't really compare the two trucks though talking a full size and a mid size.

I just purchased a 2016 TRD Offroad. I looked at used F150's but decided on the Tacoma because of resale value. I looked at 2 2014s, a FX4 and a Platinum. The FX4 had right around 50k and the Platinum had 70k. I could have picked up either truck for $30,500. The FX4 had a sticker price in the $50k range and the Platinum was in the $60k range. That's a huge loss in resale value. If you compare the Tundra or Tacoma, there is no comparison. What made my decision was a Ford forum where guys were complaining about the twin turbo engine problems around 100k miles. One guy replied "What do you expect? Its not a Toyota". I had a 2002 Sequoia, sold it to a buddy and he still has it, all original except for recommended maintenance, 400k miles. Ford sells more trucks than Toyota but there are more old Toyotas on the road than Fords.

Resale does matter... I drive a Chevy Tahoe that has had nothing but problems. I drive a lot... Like 1000 miles a week on Average. I need a truck for work. I pay cash for my vehicles and I keep them for at least 6 years or until they just can't go. I now have 305k on my Tahoe and I've replaced 4 front hubs and two transmissions. My a/c works intermittently and the cruise control stopped working at about 100k. If I wanted to sell this truck today I'd have to pay someone to take it. My previous vehicle was a land cruiser. Kept it 7 or 8 years.. Don't really remember, all I did was service it. 410,000 miles and the fuel pump went out. It cost me $300-400 dollars and I decided I couldn't trust a 400k mile work to get me around... Stupid.. I put it out on a vacant street corner lot for sale by owner and had three calls the same day to look... Sold it that night for $7000. I paid $34k in 2001. That truck paid me to drive it in my opinion. I paid $36 for the Tahoe new in 2009. If you keep your vehicle resale matters for the money... But mostly for the total cost of ownership over your life with that vehicle. My dad retired from GM I felt guilty in 2009. I no longer feel like I owe GM anything. My next one will be a Tacoma or a tundra because of my experience with the land cruiser.

In what ways? Small nimble handling? Off roading? I can think of a 1,000 other ways it is not such as luxury, technology, ride, capability and MPG to name a few...

Price point on a TRD/LTD, yes you can get an F150 but the F150 is going to have very little options. MPG wise, F150 and Tacoma are pretty close. So why the Tacoma? Because reliability, resale, and not getting too big of a truck when you dont need it.

We just sent a 2013 AC TRD OR 4x4 to the auction with 39,000 miles. It brought in $26,000. When an F150 can do that, I might think about buying one.

Another issue that I've seen with many domestic vehicles and trucks is you'll often see that $50k truck nearly always advertised/sold with $11k of cash back and discount incentives (not exact numbers, but it's usually a HUGE amount). But i did see some pickup on a commercial with 11k in incentives the other day. I don't understand why they just don't price them correctly.

You won't find that with a tacoma!

The comparable full size to my Taco is about $6-7k more. I looked pretty hard at buying a fullsize.... I was driving an S10 and have owned fullsize trucks in the past. Reasons I went Taco:

    1. Price, sale price was under $30k for crew cab, 4x4, tow, V6, SR5.... That price would get you a full size single cab with otherwise similar configuration.
    2. Easier to drive around town or in the woods due to smaller size.
    3. Gas mileage.... if you drive it like grandma, it does pretty good. I was getting 24mpg avg until I went to heavier tires. Keep it at 65 mph or less though and avoid stop and go.
    4. Resale.... Used Tacos are no deal here. If I decided I didn't like the Taco not hard to sell and get something else.

I stopped by a Nissan dealer last week, the night before I purchased my Tacoma, they had a 2012 TRD Sport with 45k, asking $29,995. I picked mine up on Saturday, msrp $39,182 , paid $36, 400 out the door. So I paid $7500 more, got a 4 year newer truck with a warranty , sunroof, nav, entune, bed cover and sliding rear window. The 2012 had none of those options. I feel pretty good about my resale value in 4 years.
