Does anyone know of a way to test this EGR valve to make sure it's working properly? I know I need some sort of vacuum to make it open and close, but I don't have one any the parts stores say they don't either. My error code is p0402 EGR excessive flow. Thanks

Best way to test it, is when its still installed in the truck.
If your truck idles smooth, then it is closed properly (ie - no vacuum leak).
While idling, if you suck on the vacuum line, and nothing happens, then its stuck closed (it should stumble and maybe stall if it opens while idling). A very easy test that will either blame or rule out the EGR valve. These valves rarely fail.

Thanks for the info. I'll try that. It hasn't had a rough idle but has been hard to crank up lately. If it's not the EGR valve then maybe the temperature sensor???

I'd have changed the gasket and the filter while I was there haha. That's what I did. I used a steel brush wheel and cleaned it up then replaced the gasket.

It could be the EGR temp sensor, or EGR modulator.

Try removing the temp sensor and clean off the deposits. Thats what solved a P0401 for me.

Where is the EGR temp sensor? I've been looking for it but I feel like I've looked past is a thousand times.

14mm fit like a glove! Just got back from my test drive, the CEL came back but i'm chipping way at the issue. Thanks again for the quick response and the picture!

I fixed my P0402-EGR excessive flow with a new vsv for the egr system. Aisin makes the OEM part for Toyota and if you buy it as an Aisin part without the Toyota name printed on it, it's like half the price. Got mine from Amazon. My egr valve itself tested fine. Then I tested the egr modulator and I found that didn't pass the tests. Got a new one and still got the P0402. Also the temp sensor tested fine, but I didn't take the testing up to the 1000 degrees part. That left me with just the egr vsv. I didn't test the old, just ordered the new one and installed. It's been almost a thousand miles and dozens of starts, no MIL. I'm a happy camper.
