Canucks basically admit they are rebuilding soon by signing Eriksson to 6 years. Hes like the perfect veteran to have around younger players. I was thinking he would go to somewhere like the Sabres but they went with Okposo

 

Here we go, take the penalty number and times it by number of years. This is a TERRIBLE deal for the Preds. Habs fans need to realize this. Probably going to retire around 37 when he makes only 1 mil per if I had to guess

 

So basically it's the team that signs a player to a 35+ deal that gets hit with the cap hit if he does retire early?

No, it has nothing to do with +35, its the fact it was over an 8 year deal before they changed the rules in 2013. New rules say any of those deals signed that were garbage BS ones when you know hes retiring, the team who benefited from cap space (they were paying him like 14 mil a season for only 7.8 mil cap hit) when the player retires they have to collect those savings as a penalty. So where they paid him around 24 mil more then the average cap space in the few years with the Preds they have to take that and divide it up with the amount of years remaining when he retires. Its just insane a penalty but they basically cheated to get the deals so I like it
