Trail was blocked by snow / ice. About an hour before we arrived the jeep driver tried to power through and almost died rolling down the mountain. He even took out a small pine when going over the edge. Tree was under his rig.

Here he is. After a short hike downhill, he was able to make a cell phone call. There was nothing I could do to help him.

Lucky guy. That could've gone a lot worse for him. Sometimes what looks like the smallest obstacle will case big problems if you don't approach it correctly.

Yep. I think he had to change his shorts. lol I think snow / ice is probably one of the most dangerous trail obstacles. If he had a shovel ( I saw none ), he could have spent about 30-45 minutes clearing the trail provided it wasn't too iced up. I wish I could have helped him in some way, but we could not. Fortunately it was only a 4-mile hike out, and he did reach help on the phone. I declined to clear the trail, and did a 5-point turn to head out.

I introduced them to the idea of soaking clothing into ice-cold stream water to cool the body on hot days. The oldest one liked it, the littlest one, not so much. lol

Love the "cape" on your daughter. You can definitely tell which one is the more adventurous of the two.

She was pretending to be Darth Vader with the cape. When you're 5.5 y/o black/pink it don't matter  We've been watching the Star Wars Movies at home and she has really taken to the whole Star Wars Universe, etc. Yeah she is definitely more adventurous. The younger one is slowly catching up as her agility improves, although in my heart I know she'll probably never match her sister who is like a cat. :D

I know the feeling. My nephew and niece (going on 6 and 4) are both in love with Star Wars and everything they get their hands on is either a laser blaster or a light saber. At first we thought my nephew was they rowdy one, turns out he's more cautious and my 4 y/o niece is the wild one that will jump off anything and try new things before her brother will even dare. It's fun to watch that develop in them. I have to say I'm the most "encouraging" family member when it comes to risk taking.

One of the most funny moments from my kids youth was when one of my sons said, "That's Steve, the White Storm Trooper from Nogales." (he was referring to a DPS Trooper who is a buddy of mine) Star Wars and raising kids. Good times. Love your photos.

    Thank you.

Your pics from your Colorado trip a few years ago were very inspiring. I think I may take off two weeks and go there next summer. My brother lives there now in Colorado Springs. I'm thinking of spending a week with him and his family, then wheeling / camping for a week.

Some days I like to just wander in this thread: Colorado Trip Reports

That's awesome! So many parallels! Yes, flashlights, wands, etc., they are all light sabers now and they cut off each others limbs.

Thanks. That's hysterical! Thanks for sharing. :)

I spent part of my youth in Durango. There are many beautiful roads in SW Colorado to travel. I am planning a trip from Silverton to Ouray off road sometime in the future.

Awesome pics. I know exactly where that jeep is. Above Mammoth (wont say the lakes since you didn't) Hope he got out okay. Sometimes you have to turn around to live to fight another day, or like you you said do some serious snow shoveling. Where is that camp spot though (Tioga Pass area)? I don't recognize that one (pm?) I love it up there any season, just don't have it in the plans this summer. Mammoth report shows they still have some chairs and runs open for skiing. Going for 4th of July close. They haven't done that in years - bodes well for water. Looks like you had a great trip.
