Anyone tried messing with the air intake resonator?

I guess you know I'm going to have to check on that ,,, I've never heard of it.
The service manager did suggest a K&M Intake
and possible an after cat new exhaust

Here's a good article; it does a lot more than mellow the sound.
    Pressure wave harmonics...

Same here... the tech that looked at mine months ago said they only thing he
could see that would be causing the issue was the engine mounts.

    Dunno
K & N offers the air filter alone , and a complete cold air intake.
The intake doesn't show a resonator that resembles the stock one.

I have an aftermarket drop in filter and yeah, most cai's, maybe all, exclude
the resonator. I'm wondering if you can just remove the resonator on our
stock intake safely. I've seen many do it on other vehicles, not sure if there
is a sensor in there or not.

So I went to the dealer right now for my 5000. Had a tech ride with me and he went through it all with me. Said it felt completely normal to him for the truck compared to the ones he has driven here before.

So I got a salesman and went in a 4x4 OR auto trans. Felt the same exact thing, buzzing in the RPM range and slight rumble coming to a stop. I only had to go less than 2 miles to recreate it. They just got that truck this week.

Well boys what are the chances of that. I'm convinced it happens in all of these trucks and some people just aren't as sensitive to it or their driving conditions dont keep them in that range that long. They said to be honest, they haven't had any complaints yet of those issues.

This will be a long...long....uphill battle for those of us that it bothers.

Yeah I got mine a week ago and I looked hard for the vibration. Its barely there around 70mph in the steering wheel. Hard to notice even when youre looking for it, so I think its an improvement.

I am also convinced that this is an issue with all 3rd gen tacomas. I've driven a few during my purchase process (most recently a June production limited) and each had the problem. My close friend is the NW quality champion for Toyota and said that corporate gets quite a few consistent complaints but the vibration specific to these threads is not one of them. Believe it or not (but im sure we all know) the Entune system and trans shifting are their top complaints.

I think my problem is that

    1. One I'm an engineer so I critique things really hard and issues like this would be unacceptable for our customers and we would be forced to find solutions to these problems.

    2. Vibration issues destroyed my last truck (literally)

    3. I've driven a lot of cars and trucks and none had this type of vibration. They didn't reinvent the whole f'ing truck or concept of how a truck works so someone, somewhere (I'm looking at you NVH team and management) could have done a better job.

I agree which is why these issues "should" be solvable even if it means doing it without the dealer. My 07 tacoma had a good amount of issues, most that are well documented, but most were fixed by me messing with things myself. If my new truck has these issues, which it likely will, I will not be opposed to experimenting to try and alleviate symptoms. I am most interested in lexus motor mounts and whether they will help out at all.

Yeah I mean, my truck has the issue (bought it 3 months ago). I go to a random dealership and drive a model that was built at a SEPARATE plant recently (baja, mine was built in Texas due to transmission). Only difference is auto transmission and some side step bars on the one I drove today. And the buzzing was there. That is just too random of a sample for me to believe this either:

    1. Doesn't happen on every single one

    Or

    2. This isn't a very widespread "issue" if it 100% is not a design flaw.

Oh well, it's part of the 3rd gen and maybe someday one of us will mess with something that eliminates it.

I don't know how Tacoma engine mount looks like, but depending on it's construction you could try removing some of the rubber from it. From what I've seen on various mounts on Subarus the firmness is controlled by three factors: rubber's durometer, amount of rubber, or rubber with liquid fill. E.g. difference between Leagacy SpecB and STI transmission mount is simply amount of rubber - the Legacy's having a major void in the rubber, making the mount overall softer.

I've been driving cars and trucks for 56 years so I believe I could tell if I had a problem and it's not a problem with mine. Sorry you're having issues but you can't blanket statement that it affects ALL 3rd Gens.

If you are telling me you can hold the wheel at 12 o'clock and accelerate on flat ground or up an incline at a steady 2000/2100-2400 RPM and feel ABSOLUTELY no high frequency vibration in the steering wheel, I would be amazed.

Like I said, what are the chances I jump in a completely random one, built at a different plant (just delivered this week I might add) than the one mine was built at 3 months ago and...there it is.

Granted it was a 4x4, I see you have a 4x2. I don't know if 4x4 vs 4x2 makes a difference or not for the issue.

I too am convinced they all have vibration at this rpm,, ive test drove about five of them at dealership and they all vibrate,, i have a friend that says his dont vibrate and he thinks imm crasy but i drove his truck and it vibrates. Lets use the dog wistle as an anology- just because humans cant hear a dog wistle doesnt mean there is not a noise being made,,, some people are feeling the vibarations while others arent picking up on it.
At 2100 rpms the motor is doing something that doesnt feel right period.

I mean it gets a little rowdy around 2000 rpm, but no electric-type buzz as has been described.

Actually, your description of the 2k rowdy behavior is more accurately a portrayal of the reproducible vibration I was talking about. I'm not certain the "electrical" feeling is what I've experienced.

Ps: my truck is not here yet, these are my experiences with trucks I drove with the intent of getting a feel for a larger sample volume.
