old truck, low miles: maintence and things to watch?

besides the routine maintenance schedule that is in the manual, what other things should I have checked and look out for? I'm somewhat mechanical and not afraid to get my hands dirty.

I recently bought a 2006 trd sport with only 69,000 miles. Before I go crazy upgrading suspension to 885/5100 and getting new wheels, I'd like to make sure everything is lubed and working great. It's been seen by a mechanic, the dealership, and I installed new plugs and air filter. No issues so far and I've driven about a thousand miles and love the way it runs.

Grease the 5 zerks on the driveline.

Front/Rear differential fluid changes.

Transfer case fluid changes.

 

He's got a prerunner.

 

yep should've mentioned that. Prerunner. I'm going to change the rear diff fluid soon for sure

and take a look at that air cabin filter. i'm pretty sure the OP of my truck didnt even know it HAD an air cabin filter. it was awful and gross.

 

oh yeah for sure those are regular maintenance things. Same thing... The air filter was filthy beyond belief at 69k miles.

 

Thats some seriously low mileage. Other than greasing zerks like others said, youre in pretty good shape. Maybe inspect ball joints and and bushings for dry rot. Otherwise, time for upgrades!

 

In my book that is a "barn find". I would check if all the recalls have been done. Also, 05-06 have the suspecious motor mounts.

yep all recalls done. Motor mounts look good. I looked into that issue. Trying to decide if I want to have it reinforced just to be on the safe side. And it was a heck of a find. Great condition, single owner that parked in a garage. Paint still looks new. Just a little ding on the rear bumper. Got it for just over $16k

 

If your pre runner has a rear diff lock, see if it still works. Lack of use is worse than over use on those. The motor gets moisture in it and binds up, they are just a cheeky little $500 motor.

 

2006 Tacoma Preunner TRD Sport has the old skool reliable LSD centrifical force locking rear end. One reason 2005-2008 Prerunner TRD Sport rock!

OP which sport package does it have? Any chance the original owner still has the original window sticker?

There was 4 TRD Sport Packages, I have only actually seen trucks with #1 and #2.

#1 is paint, and bashing. #2 has trans and oil coolers, etc.

I bought mine new, the price difference between #1 and #2 was something like $3,000.

Either way that is a miracle find!

Usually an easy way, does it have OEM draw tie trailer hitch with OEM installed wiring for trailer lights? If so probably #2

Not sure when they started doing the secondary air injection valve system but look into it.
I have a 2012 and mine just went out at only 49,000 miles and haven't been able to drive my truck for 3 weeks
Toyota wants $2,200ish to fix.
Been installing a bypass today hopefully that works but if those models have them I would run. This has been a nightmare. Would have traded my truck in if I didn't have so much aftermarket parts on it. Just saying look into it.

I honestly have never heard of that before??? Good info! I always keep an OBD in my truck, one temp solution (if it slows your truck like the guy in the link) would be to drive with OBD hooked up and reset codes as you drive? It be a pain in the #$$% but would work until you figure it out.

Yeah I wasn't sure what year. If you google secondary air injection valve you can see it was a big problem with tundras
I have never even heard of it until it happened to me.
So pissed

 

Did you check the fan belt, could be brittle. Check the hoses, 69K is no big deal there, but 10 years and such low milage could have some dry rot, also change the antifreeze as you are at 10 years........check the wipers could also be brittle......wipe down all the door gaskets with something better than armorall.......might want to pull of the rear drums and take a look at the wheel cylinders, check the condition and pressure of the spare

 

I'd be comfortable with the dealership and your mechanic looking it over.

If anyone was going to "find something" the dealership would have given you a list. I average about 7k a year on my vehicles, so just because they are old doesn't mean they are not maintained.

I'd do basic stuff check the adjustment on the rear drums, check for dry rot and cracks on tires, bushings and hoses/belts.

Odds are if all recalls and TSB's have been performed then the truck was regularly maintained. If it was garage kept, you likely have a gem.
